All Gave Some, Some Gave All

With Memorial Day rapidly approaching, my social media feeds are already filling with planned celebrations, backyard barbeque plans, and family get-togethers. I just want to make sure that while we spend time with friends and family over the upcoming 3 day weekend that we never forget the reason for this holiday, to remember and honor those who gave all.

How do you spend Memorial Day weekend?

Typicly work the chicken bbq on Sunday with the fire dept, big family reunion on Monday.

We usually finish planting the garden Monday morning before the reunion.

This year, the wife and I are planning to be away for our anniversary, so will miss all the festivities.

Re: All Gave Some, Some Gave All

I observed the annual tradition of getting together with the family, smiling at the kids playing in the yard, and definitely NOT talking about the Vietnam War, which is verboten.

Fortunate that all of my friends in the service are here today.

I try to keep my thoughts on those who aren't here for at least a bit. Mem Day, the unofficial start of summer, gets overrun by Budweiser if you're not careful.

Re: All Gave Some, Some Gave All

I didn't do much of anything today except work with my nephew who helped me do some much needed yard work.

We cleared off the front porch and I'm doing a quick grill with some chicken and a few stashed brews I save for special occasions.

I did call my Dad and we thanked each other for our service and about the other things we talk about on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

In our family the Vietnam War is always the topic of discussion. Even 50+ years later it is part of our every day lives. We don't run from it, we confront it every day.

Anyone with a Vietnam Veteran in their family will understand what I'm saying.

Re: All Gave Some, Some Gave All

My Dad's 95th birthday was Sunday.

We drove to Walnut Creek and took him and my sister out to dinner & breakfast today.

He served in the Korean War.

1st Cavalry, Sergeant...

2 Bronze Stars...

VERY DIFFICULT to get him to talk much about it.

He has been invited to the 1st Cav reunions, but it has gotten to be too much for him to travel.

and he said the last time he went, 5 years ago, there was only one other guy that came from his time....

My buddy wouldn't talk about Korea unless he was drunk, and then it was more crying than talking. Went through some tough stuff over there.

Re: All Gave Some, Some Gave All

Probably even more personal for me is to look at a picture if my father's specialty graduating class of 120 fresh faced kids going off to war.

Most died in the Pacific, some died in Korea, and the next to last died in Vietnam. Last man standing, my father always said he'd always been lucky.
