All The Excitement I Can Stand For One Week...

So, I posted pictures of the pickup that rammed the tree in my front yard on Saturday.

Yesterday, I show up at a new clients home to discuss a few jobs.

We go in the house...

"Are you afraid of dogs?"

"Me...God, I love dogs"

I proceeded to sit down on the floor to meet the dog, as I always do.

The dog proceeded to rip my lips off.

Though I didn't see it until after I got home, apparently he tore the lips apart in two places.

Little emergency room action and 30 stitches. Tough to talk , eat or drink right now. Little swollen.

The emergency room guy said I needed to see a plastic surgeon but he would get me sewn up for now.

The dog was a 9 year old Boxer who is supposed to be as gentle as they come. I do believe him. I think I was sitting too close to the sliding glass door and when he came in, I surprised him. No barking, no growling...just came over to me and grabbed my face. It all happened in less than 3 seconds.

So...accidents happen and instead of being pudgy, bald and ugly...I'm just a little uglier.

Wow, I'll have to keep that in mind because I usually do the same thing, I'm always greeting the dogs (sometime more than the ho)...

Get well quick

Concealed carry permit is good for more than defending yourself from people.

I usually leave my gun in the truck when meeting a (potential) client for the first time, If I worked in a bad area then things would be different, but I don't really feel it's right to carry into someone else's home.

Yeah...I know. I just don't think this guy had time to think. He came in and I was literally right in front of him and he felt threatened. It was his space and I was in it.

Furthest thing from my mind.
In fact, when I go back to to the work, I'll try to make friends with him...under different conditions though.

Oh crap Robie. I'll bet the HO was mortified at this. I'm guessing you just surprised the dog as you said.

I love dogs too. (In many cases more than I care for a lot of humans)

What a sorry event. Nobody is to blame here.

This is a great reminder for all of us to greet the dogs in the home first. (Pet UNDER the chin and never on top of the head with the big guys)

It may not have mattered though in this case due to the "startle factor".

Heal quick bud!

The HO is a retired Navy guy...65-ish. He was like a little girl running around.
He said..."did he get you"
I looked up at him and he went nuts. Oh God..Oh Jesus...oh this oh that. As soon as I saw blood I went to the kitchen sink and started with the cold water. He was running around half crazed. I had to keep telling him to calm down. He got me ice in a towel and was going to drive me to ER and ran out of the house. I said...whoa...you forgot your car keys, your phone and you should let the dog back in. It was actually a little comical. I was as calm as I am now but feared I was losing too much blood.
Then, I get to ER and the first thing out of the doc's mouth is Oh God, Oh Jesus. It was only then I began to think it must have been pretty bad.

Ouch... sorry to hear that.

I love dogs, grew up with dogs, very comfortable with dogs; dogs can be unpredictable at first meeting as you said. It really is best to just stand there without addressing the dog and let them sniff first. When the wag starts then offer a hand, then a ear/chin scratch and finish with a good but scratch and friends for life.

But that first 60 seconds can be a bitch.

Feel better.

That must have been one green doctor. Back in my fire department days, I saw limbs and digits severed, severe stab wounds, traumatic DOA's, etc. and we were trained to NEVER say anything the likes of WOW to the patient. (And we were just the lowly EMT's)

ER docs are usually pretty accustomed to things like this, and your injury is pretty low on the scale for WOW factor. (This comment is toward the ER doc-not you)

Regardless, get well quick buddy.

It sucks how easily we can get hurt in this line of work.

Ain't it the truth

And I said doc but should have said PAC. Pretty young at that but seemed to know his stuff. Felt real comfortable with him and he had a great sense of humor. The plastic surgeon was out of town. He wanted to ship me via ambulance 60 miles north to a surgeon but said I could always get anything that was wrong...fixed later.

any dog that bites when there isn't a clear danger to the dog or the dogs owner needs to be put down. I love dogs. I have a pit mix. Still, what if it was a child instead of an adult? On the other hand. I expect my dog to bite if there is a reason for it. So a fine line that is hard to define. Maybe the dog was right. Again, I hope you heal quickly. Best of luck to you.

If you only carry when you think it's needed, you probably should just avoid that situation. It is when you think a gun isn't needed that you should actually carry. The recent movie shootings come to mind as a good example..

I carry ALL the time, however into a private residence is not right. If you walked into my home carrying I would likely not hire you EVEN though I would be carrying. It's about respect, if you can't trust the people who call you for a proposal then you need to change your advertising.
