Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

My broccoli heads are about 1/2 size right now. I'm picking lettuce. My snow peas have just flowered. The beans are pathetic, but flowering and the peppers just don't seem to want to get bigger, but they are flowering. Tomatoes, squash and cucumbers seem to be slow this year.

Made 10 1/4 pints of mango jam the other night. It is real good, almost like mango honey. 2017 vegetable garden-20170608_203524.jpg

Do you have a mango tree in your yard that's a lot of clean up...

Picked a bunch the other day before the squirrels could get to them. I'll be making some mango salsa and mango wine in the next week. 2017 vegetable garden-20170610_192053.jpg

Great Salsa. If you spun your own pot and grew your own corn chips you'd be totally off the grid.

Peppers are starting to come in now. 12 types or so I think.

that's a pretty picture in itself.

i have a dang good v-8 juice recipe where i'll blend in 2 habaneros per 7 quart batch for canning purposes...makes the BEST bloody mary mix you can find.

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

Broccoli is about 2/3rds size. Got a few this size and the rest are smaller. That's good, don't need to many getting ripe at the same time.

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

The daily harvests are going great. Hung all the onions today. About 60 or so. Pickles taste GREAT. I just use the 24 hour recipe. The always disappear like the salsa. I have to write "brussel sprouts" on the bowl if I want any.

The peas are about 5' tall now. My contraption seems to be working well.

Got some peas starting up too.

Broccoli has gone crazy
Already harvested 6 of them

Made 9 pints of mango salsa tonight. A little sweet with just a touch of heat from the jalapeños. I like it. 2017 vegetable garden-20170618_194400.jpg

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

I'd like to make some salsa and can it. Over loaded with tomatoes now but only have bell peppers ripe now. New Mexican chili's are coming on strong tho, won't be long.

Picking about 15-20 of these a day. I have to pick 'em soon as I see color so the bug/birds don't get to them.

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

This is what Midwest farm boys live for. Sweet corn harvest!

Not as good as Ohio sweet corn but, it'll do.

When we lived at Scott AFB in southern Illinois...the corn was the best I've ever eaten.

It's in the middle of the corn belt so.....

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

My fishing buddy is from Iowa so we always have the ongoing argument where does the best sweet corn come from.

SNL, who works in the Ag. business and travels thru out the corn belt says the best he's had is from Iowa. However says test prove that corn grown in the south has a higher sugar content due to the longer growing season and varieties that take longer to ripen.

My second planting is from different seeds which ripen slower. It'll be interesting to see which turns out better. The second planting corn is a good 2' taller, not sure if that has anything to do with anything tho. Looks impressive tho.

Re: 2017 Vegetable Garden

Finally got to pick some peas. They are sugar snap peas. I let them get big and steam them with the pod still on them. Picked some broccoli just because it's never ending. Plenty more out there, just can't eat it all.

Sometimes if you brace them back upright the plants will somehow figure it all out and thrive again.

Good luck.
