When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

When is it too cold to work outside?-toocoldoutside-lge.jpg

Cold weather is relative. To someone born and raised in southern Florida, a 40-degree day can be extremely cold and hard to deal with. To someone in northern Michigan, that same weather is the balmy first sign of spring. But no matter where you work, thereís definitely such a thing as weather thatís too cold to work in. The key is knowing how to prepare for working outside during winter months, and what to do for your employees to make their workday safer. Depends.

Is the mortgage paid? For some reason the guys want payroll on time so we need to work. We have company shirts, hoodies, carharts, and talk about bundling up for cold weather so unless it's below zero, we're working!

Usually depends on how windy it is. 20 degrees, sunny with no wind is still beautiful working conditions for us. When it hits about 10-15 we usually donít install.

My guys have been doing this long enough and know how to dress for the really cold days.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

Weather conditions play a big part in when I work, don't have to work as hard anymore so the plays in too. If windy , cloudy down around zero , no work . But if haves been cold below zero , can be -30 -40 here at time, and warms up to even zero , calm sunny day out I will go work. I biggest plus is a have a heater work trailer so lots of times can be in there making things I need , go out for a while then come back in.

I don't work outside when it is below 70 or above 72.

Hey, its Southern California, I don't have to.

Under 40 I usually don't leave the house until it warms up. Shop work is fine under 50.

Depends a lot on the wind, but single digits usually keeps me inside.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

outside most of the year
if its 0į sunny and no wind, I can work all day in that
it's the wind and no sun shine that makes it cold

if its cloudy 25į and 15mph wind then we might not work
maybe try to work on a side of the building that's out of the wind
trailer is heated, so we can warm up if needed

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

We offer garage door repair services in Aurora CO, so the weather changes a lot day to day. We do have the advantage of at least being semi-inside, so we are able to work year round.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

I decided it was to cold to work outside today, none of the guys complained about taking the day off either.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

It's funny, early on in the winter I can call it at 25, once we get acclimated we can stay out down to 12 or so.
Like others have said, depends on the wind, sun, and overall conditions.
It was -9.8 here this morning, had no intentions of working as it's a holiday.
It also depends on what you're doing. Framing is different than trim work.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

Jeez. If it hits 30, I'm not working in it. Or even 45 if raining.

I've worked in the cold, maybe down to 18 degrees or so, but ain't doing that again. It was vinyl siding, so you can guess how that went.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

Our general rule of thumb is we don't work when it is 10 degrees. There are exceptions though. The sun and wind make a huge difference. I have worked in single digits on sunny days that weren't bad, and also on mid 30's and freezing rain which was awful.

Re: When Is It Too Cold To Work Outside?

Depends on the work. General construction we'll work down to -15F unless it's urgent. Windchill plays a role in deciding when to work too.

If we're working night shift doing snow removal temperature doesn't matter. -40 with -55 windchill we're working.
