Why does gender/sex matter?
In the METWO movement era, some might find reason for pause... legitimate or not...

Have had women doing construction and office... some have a tendency towards one or the other and that's where they fit best based on propensity... sister (worked together years ago) worked harder than a lot of guys I've come across...

I don't actively look for females but don't turn them away just because they are...

Sounds noble.

For field work, I'm guess you haven't either. (Right or wrong?)
Doesn't sound anything. It's just the truth. I don't care. If a woman applied for a position, regardless of that position, I would assess her like any other. I just don't understand the question. What about trans? Have you been hiring more trans people? Gay people? Black? White? Personally, I think it's a dumb question.

Again, what difference does it make?

And my daughter has worked for me. She wanted to, so I let her. My guys loved working with her and thought that she was one of the best workers we have had.

I think it's not such a dumb question. 1) Many guys pick on (tease) women..or "work" them.....and 2) "decent" guys have some innate drive to carry their load.

Sure, folks can get beyond all this, but don't be too surprised when sexist stuff happens...or when extracurricular interests develop.

Are you for real? What job site is everyone not picked on relentlessly. And we should all carry the load when someone needs help.

The reason it is a dumb question is it's not relevant to the hiring process. It isn't something we should care to answer. If I say no, will I be considered a sexist? I have already been told I probably haven't ever hired one just for what I said, so point proven.

It's a trap.

My next question is more than what? What is the base for this question?

Well Rob, I've been in construction full time 18 years - never worked beside a woman until I hired one.

It's rare. Although more prevalent I'm sure

So a legit question

Never said it wasn't a legit question, just dumb. It has no base, meaning, no context.

More than what? More than last year? More than the past decade? More than my competition?

And then what will the answers yield but a false narrative. Joe says he has. I say I haven't. Now what? Did Joe hire more because he had some apply? Did I not because I am a sexist pig?

Then the what does it matter? or why is it relevant? Women don't apply in any number that is significant.

Without context and anchors it's not a good question.

Have you hired more Trans women? They are more oppressed, according to the media, than women. What about midget black women. I have never seen one on a job site. I bet you have never worked with one of those.

That is why it's a dumb question. Can't keep making a big deal out of something that isn't a big deal. I see women on the tile forums all of the time. They get treated no different than the men. We don't care what gender they are. Doesn't matter. We should all make it not matter any longer and stop talking about it.

While that sounds good and I share those protective instincts, when you start treating women different in that way on a jobsite, it would more likely end up hurting her making her a target, as opposed to protecting her... resentment and misunderstandings of intent would likely develop...

Look at Madrina... she doesn't need anyone's help in giving or taking crap from anyone, but still all lady living in the real world...

Most jobsites have their share of inappropriate bantor, etc. and a women would have to earn her thick skin the same way a guy would... otherwise you're treating her differently and feeding the resentment cup... but trying to protect her from those realities and telling guys they have to treat her different than they treat each other is like her working with a crew in a sewer and saying to them she can't get crap on her...

Rules gotta' apply to everyone otherwise no sense in having them in the first place...

Of the two of us I have 4 women employees. How many do you have?

Never been a problem for me. Once

I have two older guys that work for me I give the same stuff to do. You won't see them packing inch and an eighth

One man saying that won't carry the same weight as another, as in all things

If somebody doesn't like it they can move along, but since my turn over is extremely low I doubt anyone has a problem with it.

Treat everyone the same is stupid to me. Troy Aikman did not get treated like a backup center for a reason. I am follow that line of thought. Everybody gets the same common courtesy and respect but not the same individual respect by any means.

Selective applications of standards/ethics only get you so far before it bites you eventually... but if it's working at this point in time for you so be it... your business, your choice...

Everybody getting the same common courtesy and respect would be treating everyone the same, which to me denotes respect... but you said that you'd in essence elevate the women above the guys by dictating that they treat her differently on the jobsite or deal with you...

Individual respect between one another is another thing altogether and involves much more and is dependent on the individual(s) and not really what we're talking about here... if it were, how we deal with individual employees versus the whole would be the discussion...

Your interpretation of me be concerned for people's physical safety and health as treating women and older or extremely small guys as above everyone else tells me you wouldn't fit in. LOL

That's apparent in all our discussions - you have your way, I have mine. I'll do what works for me. To be clear, o have changed dozens if not more things about my operation due to this site, just don't dig most of your way of doing things. I'm sure it's mutual.

One of the girls that works for me weighs about 110 lb. No, I will not ask her to carry something that is 60% of her body weight.

If I hired a woman who was bigger and stronger she could do more stuff. But as a whole women aren't built like men. If I hired a cross fit gal she can lift whatever she wants. Shes trained/ing for it. That isn't most women

My painter's son work for me on college break last Summer, I also did not have him carrying extremely heavy s*** he probably weighs 125 lbs. And not a strong 125 lb

Common courtesy does not mean I treat a laborer with the same rules I do a foreman. Doesn't work like that anywhere to my knowledge. If it does I wouldn't want to work there and sure as hell ain't going to run my company that way.

Take for example one of my highly-skilled guy's truck is broke down so he is driving the company truck home at night. If my laborers truck broke down I will tell him to walk get a ride. LOL. He hasn't earned that trust and respect

There is a difference between common respect and individual respect. It's like reputation.

Either way, you are correct, it is my company and we will do things how I want to do them. I'll let you know if I get bit but I doubt it will be too bad if I do.

If it was a big deal to someone - it isn't to me - they could have a lift test before they hired. Anyone who can't pick 115 lbs over their head can't work here in the field
