Tape Residue On Shower

I'm wrapping up a remodel today that had a fiberglass shower. During construction I used a cellophane sticky tape to protect the shower and when I peeled it off it left residue. What's the best way to get rid of this residue. I thought about goof off?

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

I'd be scared to use goof off on a shower. Try a citrus based cleaner. It is still early here so I can not think of any names to give you. Goo Gone maybe?

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

Yeah anything oil base should be able to remove the stickiness. Like the other two said; Goo Gone or WD-40 will work just fine.. Personally I would use Goo Gone, but first I would start on a small spot to test for any discolorations. Then I'd continue on to the rest if all is well with the spot test. I hope this helps, good luck. Let us know if you need anything else!

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

Try some olive oil. Natural product that shouldn't stain - but I would definitely try a small area first to make sure.

I ended up using good off. I tired several products and that was the only one that truly worked.

I used some sort of citrus based cleaner, I'll have to look at the name tomorrow. I also tried dawn dish detergent which did squat. I was a bit concerned about using goof off but it seemed to do no damage that I could see.

Don't hesitate to call the manufacturer, they know how to get rid of all sorts of marks, glue etc. Saves lots of time.

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

When I first got started in the trade I was doing a finish clean up and the plumber had drawn a center line for the faucet and spout. I tried for about 45 minutes and every solution and could not scrub the line off. Finally asked the Forman for advice, he walked over and took his pencil out and erased it. Don't know if it helped ,but just made me think about it.

WD-40 is great for lots of things. I used GOO GONE before on adhesive on fiberglass tub and it works well.

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

You're lucky the goof off did not take the finish off. That is pretty strong stuff.

Goo Gone, WD-40, Citrus based, and oderless mineral spirits are my first go to's. After that it's the goof off, acetone , thinners.

Always test an inconspicuous spot first.

Just had to clean blue tape residue off a very expensive wood floor. (mineral spirits)When am I ever going to learn.

Butter? Peanut butter? WD-40 works for me. Don't use it on a porous surface like bare wood, it will seal it. Good for colds, molds and sore whatevers.

The most important thing you learned is don't use cellophane tape.

Re: Tape Residue On Shower

On plastics I use napta fuel (camping fuel) on a cotton ball try a small area and go in a circular fashion until it evaporates changing the cotton balls frequently. To be Safe I always test it in a small inconspicious area first to make sure it doesn't discolour or de-delaminate the surface.

It works great on stickers and other things as well, if you don't have napta fuel (camping fuel) you can use lighter fluid it's the same thing but more expensive. Funny how they can put something in a smaller package and sell it as something else and charge 5 times the price for it.
