Top FAQs About General Liability Insurance For Contractors

Top FAQs About General Liability Insurance for Contractors

General Liability Insurance provides important coverage for Contractors. There are many risks associated with construction. If an accident occurs that results in a lawsuit, your company will be protected by this coverage.

This is what you need to know about General Liability Insurance.

What is General Liability Insurance?

General Liability Insurance protects your company if you are sued for damaging someone elseís property or causing them bodily injury.

What coverage does it provide?

It protects your business from the following claims:
  • Bodily injury. A claim that you were the cause of physical injury to another person.
  • Property damage. A claim that you damaged the property of another.
  • Reputation damage. A claim that you damaged the reputation of another, generally through libel or slander.
  • Advertising damage. A claim that your advertising did harm to another.
  • Medical Payments. Payment of medical costs if someone is injured on your premises without escalation to a lawsuit.
What costs does it assist with?

General Liability pays for the costs of a lawsuit if you are sued. This includes the payment of your legal defence team and the costs for evidence and witness fees. It also covers the costs if a settlement is awarded.

Are there exclusions?

General Liability does not provide coverage for:
  • Injury to your employees. If an employee is injured in the course of their work, this is covered by Workers Compensation. This is mandatory insurance. If an incident occurs and you do not have it, you will face penalties. You will also have to pay the medical care costs of your employee as well as their loss of income.
  • Damage to your own property. It is necessary to have other property coverage for this.
It is important to always check your policy wording so you are aware of any exclusions that apply to your particular policy.

Do I need more than liability coverage?

Insurance is an inexpensive way of protecting your business from unforeseen events. As a business your risks fall into four general categories. These are Commercial Auto Insurance, Property, Workers Compensation and Liability. If you have these areas properly covered, your business should be well protected.

Is there a one-size-fits-all policy?

No two companies are the same, and no two insurance packages should be either. Your business is unique in what it offers as well as the risks you face. Your insurance should reflect this. You donít want to pay for things that you donít need. Equally you donít want to be caught short if something happens. Choose an expert in your industry to make sure you get the insurance needed to protect your business.

Re: Top FAQs About General Liability Insurance For Contractors

I've recently ran across a couple of jobs that are doing an OCIP. Some include W/C; some do not. It's always been a fight between my insurance company and the OCIP manager over the credit I have to give them.
