Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

How much is that. I've been looking as well.

It's a rabbit hole for sure. I want to spend 500 bucks or so, then I see what ai can get for 600, then I find an open box that is 600 off for 1200. Then I realize I still want a gaming rig... and down the rabbit hole I go.

Then I think I'll build one, so farther down I go...

Luckily, my budget and my willpower are holding me back until the season gets rolling a bit more.

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

The one I posted I can get for under 2K.

At one point in time, I wan't happy unless a 24" monitor was in front of me. Haven't used a desktop machine for over decade.

That seems kind of high. Check out microcenter and newegg. Best Buy is pretty competitive, too.

Refurbs are usually just returns. Somebody got cold feet and took it back.

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

More I thunk on it, the more I "know" will not be using the touch screen and/or 4k display. So went shopping for the UHD conventional screen without touch.

Found there's no savings when all said and done.

hmmm

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

We bought the Dell XPS 15 laptop for my daughter who is in her freshman year of engineering at Purdue. I believe it's been a pretty good machine for her so far. We bought it through Costco while it was on deal.

I need to upgrade my laptop as the Intel graphics really can't handle Sketchup well. I would prefer an ultralight 13-14" laptop with dedicated graphics for portability. That said, the XPS 15 isn't too much bigger than my current 13" due to the thin bezel.

I went from a 17 to a 15 to a 13....I will never buy another 13 or 17 again.

When the desktop was my main machine, I used a 14" laptop.

Now, the 15.6 HP laptop is my main machine.

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

I have ordered one of these.
Decided I need a 2nd more portable laptop.
I look forward to ripping this thing a part and applying magic pads and liquid magic.

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

Are you really going to use 32 GB of RAM?

I see this all the time people over spec machines then run office and a web browser.

Inner is right an i5 seems to be the sweet spot unless you are doing something that really taxes the cpu.

Look for off lease not a refurb. Off lease comes out of business environments where the machines are lightly used and usually well looked after. I have a 6 year old off lease machine as my daily driver paid about 50% of what new would have cost me and have never had a single issue with it.

Also make sure you get an SSD drive.

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

How can one possibly "overspec" a computer?

You can get to work with a 10 year old, rusted ass, oil burning pickup.

Dos it follow that a brand new, fully loaded pickup is "overspecced"?

Re: Window Hopping - Laptop

I've seen plenty of over specd systems that never get above 20% utilization.

I'm not saying don't get it I'm just saying sometimes less is more.
