These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

Every month Windows 10 or the OS or apps on the phone.

What gives? Are these things that unstable that they must continue to update? Or is it something else?

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

Amazing that everyone jumps on the 'latest and greatest' Windows when it claims to have all the security holes patched. Then even more security holes are found in the new version compared to the old one. It's a never-ending process.

Windows 10 is just a 64-bit update for a 32-bit patch of a 16-bit rewrite of an 8-bit app based on a 4-bit OS by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

Software is basically a string of iterations now. Major overhauls that implement core changes or a large number of simultaneous changes are called a new version to adjust people's expectations. It's not a bad thing, it's just different than it was in the 90's because development is accelerated.

The nature of cyber security also means that as fast as they patch holes, other people are searching for new exploits which means new patches to correct the new exploits. Cybercrime is a multi-TRILLION dollar industry. If you want to ignore updates and patches, be prepared to have it cost you at some point.

O.K., that was just a brilliant bit of writing there.

I don't agree with it but, damn.

It looks like Windows 7 is no longer being supported by Microsoft, no updates for that so it's time to 'upgrade' to Windows 10................. adios Windows 7!

Good luck with that identity theft OS. Unless you're a big corporation I don't see much need to swap out of Win7.

I completely bypassed 7 & 8. I ran XP until it went wack a doodle. By that time 10 was out and loaded in everything.

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

I can't complain too much about Windows 10. They did basically give it away for free this time. Minus the update that killed my drive. And it didn't actually kill the drive, just the boot sector, so I was able to pull everything off of it.

Gaming with a SSD that is also your boot drive is probably not a great idea either.

Android on the other hand

10 needs supplemental security. Windows defender is OK but not the best.

I've had a couple intrusions. Took your advice on the hard off.

I hate the new phones. I'm almost ready to go back to a flip with a full qwerty.....if I could only find one. Talk and text is about all I do. Occassionally check e-mail. The rest is bloat and much of it pre loaded so you can't get rid of it

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

I'm a phone geek, as well as a big time mobile gamer. So I like my top end phones. However, I wish they would do the security stuff, but not mess with the day to day operations.

My wife and I were talking about this the other day. It takes months to get it working perfectly, then they update and move buttons and subtract options or move options behind menus and it becomes so much less intuitive.

The last two updates have screwed my caller ID ringtones and text tones. Some work, some don't and then they do sometimes and then don't. Just leave that stuff alone. No one wants it to keep changing.

It's not like if they leave it alone I'm going to get mad and get a Windows phone.

When I go out to the family farm the internet does not work. After a couple days you feel different I swear.

I've attributed it to no RF Wi-fi signals. I actually rise before the sun and feel refreshed. That doesn't happen here

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

Security patches are one thing. You should do them. But when they force an OS change on you you should have the option to accept it or opt out. like you said, changing everything about the phone you've been using for a lot of months or maybe a year or two without consent is just ludicrous.

When I had the S4 they upgraded the OS and it went from a nice colorful phone to basically a black and white theme. Who the hell made that decision? Then they slowly but surely killed the access you had to your SD drive under the auspices of security. So destroy the functionality of the phone to protect you from a possible hack. I rooted my phone and went back to where I liked it.

Recently they did a medium upgrade on the phone and took away the personalized notification tones I had setup for my texts. People had a certain sound so I knew who was texting me. Who the hell at Samsung thought it was a good idea to eliminate this valuable feature when it had been on their phones since before the S4. Idiots.

The backlash was so severe that within a month they had another update to fix a security hole and low and behold they slipped the functionality of the text notification tones back in without mentioning it. I guess they were too embarrassed to let people know that they realized they screwed up in the biggest of ways.

That happens when I go camping. But I still have phone service and access. If you feel so bad turn your wifi off at night and on only when you are using it.

We probably still have my wife's Moto Razr in our junk drawer. It's pink.

I had a silver one, the 4 key died.

Re: These Updates Are Driving Me Nuts

Mobile OS changes are interesting. I have service from Cricket and they have never pushed an OS change on any phone but I understand that the big boys do it. I could certainly be wrong but this appears to be driven by the service providers rather than Android as you can go out and buy new phones running older versions of Android OS due to processing limitations. I've seen Verizon and ATT versions of the OS and they are packed with bloatware.
