Re: Sorting GPS Coordinates For Travel

Maybe it hasn't been done because it's a potential liability problem. Sometimes you need to take the hairpin turn, or go around 3 sides of the square to avoid crashing into the mountain.

That could be said of any GPS product.

BTW, I couldn't find really old posts of yours on this forum but it seems you are all over the Internet.

Given that, people like me are probably the least of your worries.

I have a list of random GPS coordinates. I want to sort them out along a route so I don't spend two weeks backtracking the route.

In other words, sort these out from coast to coast:

41.08598 -95.00977
41.41637 -102.5683
38.72666 -89.56055
42.33256 -72.77344
40.48707 -79.18945
41.61380 -109.9511
41.28441 -96.94336
40.48707 -86.22070
41.41637 -112.7636
38.52067 -122.6953
I don't understand why you can't work this out on Google Earth and Google Maps??

I enjoy reading your stuff...I do have to admit that for some reason I imagine you in a smoking jacket wearing bunny slippers with an aluminum foil hat atop your head.

You are definitely interesting!

Re: Sorting GPS Coordinates For Travel

480,

Its been years since I used Streets & trips and Mappoint, and they are discontinued anyways.

Yup, Google won't do what you want.

So, it looks like the salesman routing softs is the best around, something like this?

http://www.mapbusinessonline.com/Sol...FQoPaQodZpsJxw

Beyond integration with ACT! and other CRM (you don't need that right?), it specifically mentions adding waypoints and updating your route.

Also, can import from GPS datasets and or Excel (way beyond my IQ). Subscription based model (bleeding out by a thousand small cuts).

Was Microsoft Mappoint not up to the task?

It appears that any solution (if there is one) isn't available on the market. I may have to resign myself to sorting them out manually.

I have many years' experience with an archaic method of trip planning and execution. It usually involves large pieces of paper covered with graphics.

I could tutor you in it for a modest fee.

Re: Sorting GPS Coordinates For Travel

Unless you are reconnoitering on foot, for several days, to get to a High Sierra lake that has the prized Golden Trout, do you really need a GPS?...

When you get to a pre-programmed point can't you just enter the new point for directions?

Sure......... if I want to take the time to enter each set of coordinates manually. But creating a .GPX file that's already sorted and uploading it to the device is a whole lot faster when on the road.

If you are on the road why the need to enter coordinates?

Can't you just enter "Joe's Burger Shack" or what ever?

Only times I have used coordinates is to go back to the same spot on the ocean or track back when packing an Elk out.

I don't get it if you are on the road.

Be easy I'm tired and almost as old as Tin.....

Because the old barn I want to photograph isn't listed in the device as "That Old Barn You Want To Photograph". I need to punch in 46.705544, -110.862650. Creating a list of 'in order of travel' coordinates as a GPX files makes it stupid easy to travel from one subject/scene to the next.

Bunny slippers?

I do seem to provide entertainment for some people, occasionally. One test said I was "droll."

But I have to tell you that the people I threaten to sue or blow the whistle on or do "process commentary" on or pursue doggedly or use "verbal judo" on, are not so amused.

Bottom line - I guess I want to be remembered, for good reasons or for bad. . .
