"Because they wanted you to use Apples maps."

Well "duh".

What I care about, is that so far Apple's Maps works for me.

Used those map devices a lot Navteq, Garmin, etc, looking at land and properties, and they used to irritate the sh!t out of me.

Apple wasn't allowed to look at the coding of the Google maps so they couldn't verify the coding was safe, so it wasn't allowed on the platform. Apple maps was inferior to Google maps (at the time, don't know about now) and the Apple community raged that they couldn't use it on their phones.

yup. That much is true too.

Apple's app works for me. How it stacks up against Google's - have no clue.

And if I didn't have Siri, I'd be up schits creek, because my poor old fingers don't type worth a damn.

Mostly type into my phone since now I have to be connected to data for it to understand me, my last phone worked without a connection. But I talk to google maps because I have to be connected to use it anyway.

Which is why I use my Garmin 95% of the time. But it's old and I've had people live in areas which don't exist in my maps. Then I need to use the phone as GPS.

Like everything else... By design... it's why they get access to everything to make it that way...

We used to use actual maps when plotting courses, but they don't show the closest restaurants...

You can use the maps if you want. I'll use the Garmin or the phone when necessary. Gonna really suck when the SHTF and the GPS satellites are blocked or taken out. Young people will be clueless on how to use a paper map.

Re: Android Is A Spy Network

Reading a map while driving is worse than texting while driving. I know; I've done both and had way more close calls when using paper maps.

Tough for Garmin to keep up, with only annual updates of their maps vs Google's constant dynamic updating of its servers.

Re: Android Is A Spy Network

Mine is 10-12 years out of date and it's still pretty rare for me to need to use the phone as a GPS.

Re: Android Is A Spy Network

Sure, it works fine in areas that are relatively static. Try that where whole developments are popping up like mushrooms in spring. Even Google often has trouble keeping up with that.
