Re: Android Is A Spy Network

Non-removable batteries allow more room for stuff, or - smaller, stronger form factor.

I don't know how it works on Android. On iPhone, you can select to leave location service off - except for when a specific app is running that requires it.

But yeah, Google Chrome spies on everyone, I'd expect that same from their OS.

In the old days you had to sign a guestbook I guess. Now they know you're a patron w/o you knowing it.

Too late. We already don't trust you. You are spying on the entire population of phone owners. That's a violation of the 4th amendment because you don't have a warrant. You are selling our information, something you don't own, it's something you stole.

I visited a website and they sent me an email. I never gave them my address.

I think the only way they can ID you is by WiFi. I don't think they can ID you by your cellphone ping without setting up a stingray type device which is illegal.

Keep your WiFi off when you go out.

Turn the location off and certain functions won't work

I admit I don't know squat about Android. On iPhone, easy peasy, and everything still works.

PS: You can still buy a flip phone, if that ability to pull the battery is important. The LG 441G is such a phone. I've got one sitting here, slowly rotting away.

Yup, I could do business without a smart phone.
I started with the bag-phone when they came out.
Graduated to the phone twice the size of 2 packs of cigarettes...
Kept going from there until I had the latest and greatest Samsung product.

I don't mind saying....daily work would be a little tougher without it.
A lot of my customers have second and third homes and I look after their houses while they are not there.
I can take a great picture of possibly something that needs to be repaired....research the costs of the parts...send a picture of what I need to a supplier...get a quote together and either email or text it to my customer who is on a barge cruise on the Danube...from the comfort of their living room. Pretty damn cool.

It comes with a price. That price is privacy.
But, of all the millions and millions of smart phones being used out there, I really doubt if they are honing in on Robie. They may be harvesting my location and what I'm buying/where I'm going, etc....but...it doesn't bother me that much. Yeah, it bothers me a little...wished they wouldn't do it but the genie is out of the bottle and it ain't going back in. Period.

They can market my ass all they want. I pretty much make up my own mind of where to spend my money and on what. When I get the message that asks if I enjoyed my visit to ACE Hardware...i just clear them a few times a day...no big deal.

I do feel it's going to be bad for the youngsters growing up. They are getting smart devices at a younger and younger age. Their lives will be dictated by the harvesting of information from a young age. I think the surface is only being scratched with what these devices will be capable of in the not too distant future.

Me? I'm just an old man with a dog. I enjoy the capabilities of them. Mostly I guess because I remember black and white TV with 3 stations and the canary yellow rotary phone.
I wouldn't want to go back to that.

Re: Android Is A Spy Network

I received a small device in the mail from Google about one year ago. It looked like a thumb drive. It was supposed to send advertising to customers' cell phones when they come to my office. I think that is what is happening in this case. That is not new technology and has been around for at least 5 to 7 years. It must work like Amber Alerts where the alerts pop up even when our phone screens are locked and turned off.

Actually, no. Apple themselves don't sell any of the location data like Google does. Third party apps that you allow access to location services will collect all that data and they might sell it, but with an iPhone it's a lot easier to turn that off for those apps.
On an Android phone, there's a lot less control of the third party apps and Google is much more interested in monetizing your data so it's become a free for all of data mining and selling.
Have you ever read an End User License Agreement for any of your apps on Android? Nobody does, but there's a lot of data sharing that you agree to when you install the app.

Interesting to note (if I've got my facts right) Apple did not allow Google Maps on the iOS devices until just this year.

You could install Google Chrome web browser, but not the maps application.
