What Percentage Of Your Business Is Commercial Vs Residential And Why?

We track our jobs and separate commercial from residential. Years ago just t was 99% commercial, but tile installation veered toward 80% residential after several years.

Last year we ended up with literally 50/50 split.

Lots of the commercial work has a night work component to it, so you can't say it's 'easier', but it tends to pay well in general.

What's your split on commercial work vs residential work?

If you do both, which one do you like better?

Practically zero commercial. It's just two of us and my niche in the area seems to be pole barn floors. I'm not adequately staffed or tooled for commercial work in most cases, except for the few small things I've done like sidewalk repairs or exterior repairs on veneer.

Until this year, I was 95% Residential. Then I kindof accidentally got in good with an architect that is constantly referring us to commercial work, so that has started to become a lot bigger for us. There is certainly more money in it, but we did have to scale up quite a bit. Suddenly, owning two nails guns and a couple of ladders wasn't enough, ya know?

I've found there to be enough money in the commercial work that we can easily just got buy whatever it takes to get the job done.

I keep track, roughly. My insurance audit asks, every year. Percentage wise, I take as much commercial as I can get.
It's so much easier. The architect has already decided all the finishes. I don't have to meet with a homeowner to decide what color stain or some other small detail that I don't care about.
Baseboard, do you want black or brown? Walls, smooth or smooth? Ceilings, suspended or suspended.
Some might think that is boring, but I like boring. Straightforward.

Another benefit of commercial work is that your client that you are doing the deal with is often spending corporate money rather than coming right out of his pocket, so they aren't so price sensitive like some homeowners can be.

I am approximately 100% commercial, Much more level playing field, insurance requirements, 1099s etc. keep me from having to compete against off the books competition.

Varies from year to year, I'm anywhere between 70/30 and 50/50. If I didn't do commercial I'd be broke.

Yes this is true,

For example I do repair work for behr paints and stains at their factory and last year the superintendent that I have known for years told me to set up the ability to process credit cards (square reader) because she could pay me at the end of the day as opposed to going through the PO process which takes up to 90 days to get a check (typical corporate BS)

I mentioned the process fee and she said i dont give a chit add on as much as you want..... put another hundred on there

Hahah

I am about 75% resdential and 25% commercial. I am happy with that. I avoid most new construction work, it just doesn't suit my schedule arrangements.
