Are There Any Cities Or States Where The New Home Market Is Doing Good?

Are there any cities or states where the new home consrtuction market is doing ok, besides Washington DC? I am to the point of relocating anywhere in the USA to be able to work everyday.

I have no idea where that might be at this point. I'm from your area and I have wondered how the framers and foundation/concrete trades have survived. Back in around 2000 or so I went from one new house to the next doing the electrical. It was great.

Recently, the trend here is remodeling which requires only minimal framing from what I've witnessed.

Fortunately for me, electrical work and remodels have been somewhat consistent.

Has this been your observation also?

I don't work new construction, but all the guys that I know who do are about back to normal around here. I have a friend who just retired from the city of Phoenix and is building a new home south of Phoenix. I can't believe how cheap they are building down there. Must be very little work in that area.

Toll Bros. just started a development around me. They threw up 12 houses in no time that are all sold. Other then Toll around here everybody has really slowed down.

I have to agree with Texas, as far as building, however, I don't think framers make much down there. I had a buddy tell me two years ago that that framing in the Kansas City area was 2 - 2.5 times as much per sf as it was in the Houston area.

You might want to make a few calls before you up and move.

My 2 cents,

Most framers are working at Sonic and Walmart now. I saw a huge exodus 18 months ago for framers, they were the first to get hit the hardest and seemed to have the hardest time finding something in construction to do.

If you are going to relocate in search of work, follow the money. The only growth industry we have seen in the last 2 years has been government.

Obama expanded the governement payrolls like no one has seen since WWII. He created more over $100,000 a year jobs then any president ever.

Sniff out where these government jobs are and you'll find work --hint (washington DC area)

Start doing some research about that area and I think you'll start finding information that you'll like.

The rest of the country will come back slowly in localized places, but if you want something right now, that would be the place to look. However, you might end up chasing your tail, since all it will take is a change in DC and DC might slow down and then you're back where you started and the work might be out in Las Vegas then or someplace else.

Re: Are There Any Cities Or States Where The New Home Market Is Doing Good?

My barometer for widespread new construction is the number of lumber bulkhead railcars that are stored on the trackage of the smaller railroads here in the West. There are literally miles and miles of them in some areas. Some of the shortlines around here make most of their money renting out storage space for the big operators like UP or BNSF. When they start moving them, I'll know there's a real uptick in new construction.

On a local level, I look at the number of late-model high-end 4WD pickups on the used car lots. When those start to move, I'll know that the framers and millworkers have gone back to work.

No ocean, but long as there's water, marine biology still applies Plus she'll know all the best fishing spots

Yes IUPUI, she went there before and liked it. Aparantly they don't have the entire program, but it's easy to transfer credits to another school. It's a mix of schooling, her family being there, and us wanting to start a family that warrants this move.

Marine biology is saltwater and if she wants that, do not go to an inland college.

Fisheries biology is freshwater and is my degree.

You take the smallest room in a house and remodel it. Any gay interior designer can do that. Haven't you watched TLC or the other numerous home improvement shows? Anyone can do it.
Bathroom Remodeling, Hmmm A little bit of demo, A little bit of tile setting, Maybe a little bit of plumbing if you can handle it (Remember once you open it up you own it so you have to have code compliance) Some fixture changing (I think just about anyone on this forum save the painters can change a water closet) And a lot of graft or grift (the typical bathroom remodel costs are way overpriced)

We painters might not be the sharpest tools in the shed, but I'm not sure the average drywaller even knows what a terlet is.
