My Closing Percentage Is On The Up...

THis year i made some excutive decisions to eliminate a large part of my advertising that i did in the past. Bascially i decided not to run my ads in the service directory of the local news papers. Previously these ads always produced work for me, the proablem was dealing with all the price shoppers. And then the jobs i got, while profitable, were just not the jobs i really want to do, nore were they the jobs that couldshowcase my ablity.

This year i am being very selective on what calls i even go out and look at the job. I even made it out to a few houses and told the people that i just was not the right company for the job.

Basically, i focused all my energy on a small number of jobs i really wanted and it is definetly paying off.

You have your niche market and you know what you want to do and that's it. GOOD!

You should consider continuing to run some ads, it keeps your name on the lips of your past customers that found you that way, and it is good to tell the customers that call, they will need to wait until next year if they want you.........good for moral and good for business.. not wasted money. You don't get to be number one in the eyes of the customer if they forget who you are. I like to hear people say how busy they are, it sounds better when they are making money too.

Re: My Closing Percentage Is On The Up...

The thnig is, 90 percent of the jobs i've done in the past were not jobs that i REALLY WANT. I want jobs that i can be artistic and creative on and really build something great.

The jobs i have gotting in the past were just jobs. Its disappointing to do a job for 15k and look at it when you are done and say "Its really is not impressive. I do not want to put it in my profolio"

As a young company i think its more important than ever to do jobs that will help advance my company.

I tend to agree with wood. Keep the ads but redesign them. Try to make the point that you aren't a handyman but a specialist. The ads are so cheap (It costs me less than $300 per month to run in three papers along the Philly Main Line) and they go a long way towards keping your name on the minds of the right clientele. I do understand your position about being a quality niche but it can be done without losing exposure and leads. Here is a tongue-in-cheek example, but emphasizes my point:

NOT EVERYONE DRIVES A MERCEDES
But for those that demand the very best in custom remodeling ..

Don't consider it advertising. From what you are saying, you're hoping to build an image. Your marketing will encourage the acceleration of the image.
Remember, you only get what you ask for and what you take. And you can say no to things that you are given. You want quality, market to it. You don't what small jobs don't ask for then and don't take them.

Re: My Closing Percentage Is On The Up...

Now how do i make a business card size ad in a local newspaper service directory that will attract high end customers?

My proablem in the past with these types of ads were that people would call every contractor in there under the listings.

You have a kick ass Logo, under it a web address or phone number. Qualify the callers on the phone, or via email.

Re: My Closing Percentage Is On The Up...

Previously my ad was my logo and brief list of services and then a phone #.

Hmmmm i got a awesome design program and as it turns out i am a talented designer. Maybe if i do ads focusing on designs, i may be able to attract clients that normally wouldn't call someone out of the papers.

Personally, i do not want to design something and have someone else build it. If i design something that is awesome and someone else builds it, they will forget all about me when someone comments on how their backyard came out.

Now if i get people to hire me for the design i am oviously going to have to met with them several times to come up with a good plan. During that time i should be able to establish a relationsip with those people and reel them in.

Good angle or bad angle?

Referrals and Relationship-Based Marketing - that's where I'd focus. Find people who deal with the type of customers you want - and form relationships. Develop a referral-marketing program to generate referrals on purpose - not by accident.

Congrats!

Is that a local Assocation...or national.

Local association, tied to international organization. The referals are local.

BNI is a good program to get into, if you can devote the time to it (or have someone in your organization that can). Remember - it's a two way street. The more you give to others - the more they will be giving to you. If you just pay the dues and expect people to send you leads - save your money.
