Finding Talent
 
Hi, all.

I'm newly registered but not new to the site. I was wondering about some of the ways established contracting companies are finding new talent and their approach to hiring people with almost the right credentials for a position.

In the Seattle area, we are so thin on available talent that it is getting very difficult to continue to grow a business, despite the reputation and demand. Any experiences/suggestions/advice would be welcome.

It really is about enticing them away. Not like good talent is just sitting at home not working.

To add to the strategy, aggressively pursue in the slowest months. Even up there things are probably a little slower in Feb.

The question you have to ask yourself is what draws talent away from their current gig? If you can't answer the question, you're going to have a hard time crafting and casting a lure...

Keep in mind, crafting and casting that lure is going to be different for each position, and you weren't really being specific as to what talent/position you're looking for...


Maybe a little more specificity as to what role you're attempting to hire for...

I just wonder about anyone in the trades that uses the word "credentials" in respect to construction workers.

Probably a little different in a bigger area but just put the word out. If you got a good reputation they'll come on.

While everybody who is any good I've hired had a job when they came to work for me I don't actively go to other contractors job sites and pursue them. That's a dick move in my opinion. If I hear they're looking I'll call them if I was hard up.

I actually fired a dude who was talking to another contractor at my actual job site, I pulled up and asked what it was going on? He said he called the contractor to discuss possibly going to work for him and he stopped by. I said well now your decisions made brother. Pack your **** up. LOL.

Admittedly a dick move, I was 27 or 28 and was a bit hot tempered. Plus that dude was a snow flake and annoyed the hell out of me lol

If that happened now I wouldn't think much of it.
