Do You Make Them Sign A Bill For A One Day Job ? ( Deposit?)

i usually don`t for a 1 or even a 2 day job .
i just go in , and bill after.

reckless i guess

lets say your replace some rotted wood that`ll take you a day?
or coming in and install bath accessories , or locks, or something minor
or what about where its all labor , and no materials

do you guys have clients sign something first?
do you ask for a deposit?

Do you at least give them an idea of how much it will be or are you on such good terms with the customers that you just go and do it and then tell them the price ? Deposits on quick jobs make no sense to me. Iíve never taken one.

Its worthless to have them sign off with it that small. If they don't pay you a couple hundred bucks, what recourse do you have legally that would be worth the effort?

of course i price it out .

i do have a handful of clients where i just do it , and price it after, but takes a lot of trust.on those , i`ll even show them the receipts , and charge the hourly rate.

if i don`t know them i`ll give a set cost of course

I do take a down on some of my glass repairs. If not I end up with a stack of custom glass that I can't use and paid out of pocket for.

If its cut glass I cut, then no, but if I am ordering IGUs or tempered, then I do.

If it's a contractor I know, then usually not, but a new customer who needs 2 or 3 hundred in custom sized glass, then I do.

So it depends.

Quick repairs no. I just go and do them, get paid as soon as I'm done.

I just finished up a cabinet reface job today. $5500. No contract, no down payment. Finished the job, she wrote me a check. Pretty much how 90% of my jobs go.

I generally have them sign the estimate before they get put on the schedule. If I take a deposit or not depends on if they are new or repeat client, total cost of the project, and if anything is special order.

I agree with this...pretty much how i do it

Total stranger requires at least a small down payment prior to starting any work

It's the norm around here. Had over 3000ft of concrete poured recently. Never even got a written bid, just a verbal quote on price per sq ft. When completed, he handed me a bill, I wrote him a check at the end of the project.

Course we're in a pretty rural area & word travels fast if you're a deadbeat.

Re: Do You Make Them Sign A Bill For A One Day Job ? ( Deposit?)

Contract and 25% deposit on every job over $500. With all the neighboring townships, villages and cities requiring separate licensing, bonds and sometimes even inspections it keeps me out of trouble.

It’s embarrassing and a waste of time to stop into a village hall to pick up a permit and realize you don’t have the required signed contract. Or even worse, forgetting to charge the customer for a $50 dollar permit and having to eat it on a $500 job.

Also, I’ve had to use a contract to show an inspector that I was replacing “like with like” size gutters in a area that requires inspections ONLY for larger gutters or downspouts.

Inspectors? Bonds? Permits ? As bad as socialist NY is Iíve never ever needed any of these for gutter replacement. What percentage of the areas you work in require all of these ?

Re: Do You Make Them Sign A Bill For A One Day Job ? ( Deposit?)

in miami , everything over a couple hundred bucks technically need a permit

years back i was in a nice area ( miami shores ) doing base molding .
inspector drove up , and said " you need to get a permit "
i said " are you kidding? its only base!"
he said it doesn`t matter , and that i had to get a permit .

can`t do any work in most condos without a permit , and proof of full insurance coverage , and license , and permit if there is any framing/electric/mechanical/or plumbing .

doors , windows , permit
decks , fences , permit
in coral gables , you need a permit to paint the INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE!

most homeowners ask me not to get a permit ALL THE TIME , because it usually makes the project double as far as time , and cost .

just finished a 3 months project , didn`t get a permit
but when they sell , realtors , and buyers look up( or have home inspectors look up) whether they got permits , and then bargain the price down if its obvious the house has been renovated , and not down without permit .
its all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I a lot of work without permit , but make sure we do it to code , so if an inspector , or code enforcement comes , they only fine you for no permit
if its illegally done , they can bring in front of the board.and fine the hell out of you , and put a mark on your record that will show if someone looks up your license

the good life !

Re: Do You Make Them Sign A Bill For A One Day Job ? ( Deposit?)

glad to see a lot of you guys go by verbal agreement

i usually print out a cost , but rarely have them sign it .
most of my jobs are referred , and i just go by trust ( not very smart legally i know )

but i`m about to start a large project with these out of town investors , all will be with signed contract.
you really can`t chase someone out of town easily to get your money .

in 35 years , only had 3-5 legal issues about collecting money

I donít think I would do what I do if I have to get a permit for jobs and have increased bureaucracy. I do ok because of the simplicity of how I run my business sometimes.

Once in a while I give a price through pics homeowners send me, email an estimate, do the job and customer pays through app. Iíve sold many jobs this year from my couch.
We also sometimes do 3 jobs a day. Thatís a lot of running around for permits.

I can tell you that you would not be installing a lot of gutters around here if you dont want to pull permits....

Most of the towns are not too horrible trying to get a permit, I always give a customer a quote and let them know that a permit may be required and will be an additional fee on top of the quote. If they agreed to my price, terms and conditions I then called the Village to find out if one is required and charge them appropriately for the permit, fees and a little on top of that for my time

Nonein the city of Chicago. But outside of the city more than half of the towns and villages require permits. All the towns and villages require licensing and that requires a bond.

Dosnt sound like it. Not about the fees. Those can be put into the price. Iíd have to hire someone to just go get permits. We work in an hour radius from my shop. Where I live you donít even need a license for any trade. Crazy how places are so different.

Wow. Pretty crazy. Do you spend a lot of time running around getting permits and stuff ? Do they issue you one right away ?
