Client Paid Me Same Month. Now Changed That To Wait 3 Months. What To Do?

I have an easy job once a month. It works out to be about $120 an hour on average. Takes 3 hours total.

The job is to inspect 2 empty stores to make sure all is OK. Take half a dozen pictures and a simple 6 question form to fill.

I've been doing it for over 5 years now. It's an easy day at the end of the month, sometimes a pain in the azz if I'm doing a job that's hard to get away from though, and can mess up a productive day.

The company have been great at paying, I'd bill them couple of days before month end and have a cheque for the invoice 2 to 3 weeks later.

A few months ago though I got an email from them saying they are moving to a system where they will pay 90 days! after billing them.

I've just billed them now and looking at my outstanding invoices, it goes back as far as me billing them for inspections I did in March!

It's all OK in theory that one day (whenever that is) that I'll get those 3 months they owe me for.

But it's kind of watered down what was a good job into a soso job.

I didn't put up the rate I charge them for the inspections in 5 years, but figure it's time to do something about it.

How would you guys approach this one?

Play their game. Send them and email stating your new price and payment terms. Up your price by 15% and offer a 5% discount for invoices paid in 10 days.

I don't really see an issue, unless your rent's due next week and you don't have it.

With an ongoing relationship like that, you'll still bill every month and get a check every month. Bonus, if/when you part ways, you'll still be getting paid three months later.

I'd prefer to only bill once every three months.

I'd want to know why after 5 years, they need to switch to 90-days out for such a small amount... otherwise, this...

Or pre-bill 90-days prior... it's a consistent bill that hasn't changed... not enough money to keep track of whether their 90-day cycle is on track... but up to you...

Sounds to me they don't care for his inspection anymore.

On second thought, it still sounds like easy/steady money in this specific case.

Why is this place remaining vacant for 5 years, anyhow? Vancouver in a depression or something?

It's more like there are rich people parking their money here and they have that much that they sometimes don't care if it's leased out or not.

It's a small amount, so it's not going to sink the ship.

However it's not what we originally agreed to and not what we've been doing for the last 5 years, also I'd say there's cash flow considerations that I think they should be thinking of.

Myself I like the money in my pocket and not as some 3 month payment in 10 years when I retire, or chasing them if they go bankrupt.

It's an easy gig, I've never met anybody from the company in the 5 years I've been doing it.

At one time they had me look at 4 rotating billboards once a month. I asked them how much they'd pay me for each one and they offered $125 each and I accepted.

They said we'll send the locations over in an email. When the email came it was like christmas as I could drive to them all in less than 15 minutes total!

Lasted a year and then they didn't need them checking anymore.

It's 300 bucks a month. Or 900 every three. What's the problem?

Don't overthink it.. terms and risk changed so should price to reflect it... what that is in consideration to both, is up to you...

Why do you care? You do it every month, the only diffference is you will have 2 months without a cheque, then they start rolling in each month.

Quit yur bitching.
