Anybody Using QuickBooks Other Programs

As of last year I split from my partner went out on my own we used to have an in-house bookkeeper. Now I don't & I'm looking for a way to keep all of my records for every job without keeping a stack of paper receipts & records as I sometimes get bombarded at the end of the week with fist fulls of receipts from different job sites

Re: Anybody Using QuickBooks Other Programs

I to have been using QuickBooks contractor edition from the start. It is a great program but has a learning curve. I use it to do all of my estimating and invoicing, then I hire a bookkeeper to input all of my expenses and purchases. Almost 100% of what I purchase for my business comes with an emailed receipt which I store in Dropbox. I really cant imagine doing it any other way. Being a GC I don't have the need to email receipts to anybody but a bank if they are involved. When I do I use CamScanner on my phone which works very well.

On another note... If I need to send an invoice immediately on the job I use the Joist App on my phone. With this app you can take pictures of receipts and include them in the invoice. I then send a copy to myself that I input in Quickbooks when I get back to the office.

Joist. Now accepts credit card payments. Have you tried yet?

Re: Anybody Using QuickBooks Other Programs

I just started using QuickBooks this year. I don't believe it's the contractor edition. I would be curious to hear what advantages the contractor version has.
So far it seems to be very helpful and time saving. The best part for me so far is being able to work up and send estimates and invoices straight from my phone rather than waiting to get back to my office to work up a spreadsheet. Another thing it saves time on for me is payroll.
It also works well to track expenses although I'm still figuring out the best balance of debit card tracking and receipt input. I'm excited to get more involved with it as the year goes on.

Same here.

But the problem that less organized contractors always face when dealing with computers is "crap in=crap out".

I spend no more than 10 minutes at the end of every work day entering every single receipt and job costing each one.

I guess if it's put off until the end of the month it could be a headache, but that's simply a personal choice of the contractor how often to do entries.

I'll never know and my books are impeccable.

^^^This right here! We have been using QB Contractor edition since 2002 or so. Enter receipts daily or every couple days, setup item lists for job costing, and enjoy tons of reports & happy accountants.

Re: Anybody Using QuickBooks Other Programs

Mine is from 95 Im sure it must have improved greatly since then but crap in crap out was a good example.

I fell off track with it on payroll stuff years ago and since just keep it as a massive data base of checking, mental invoicing and customer information.

Im actually a little afraid I would lose some data updating. In the early years I compressed data on floppys, then cds.

Its good for people like my electrician who uses it as single line vague billing. I cant do that I used word documents for contracts and proposals.
