What Is It? It's Gotta Get Fixed/replaced

Tree fell on roof. Insurance company says its slate. I say it Transite asbestos shingle. Sending to a lab on Monday to have verified.

It did test positive for asbestos already so will need to research what regulations will need to be followed.

Either way it's not going to be a cheap project imo.

Anyone familiar with this?

Looks like transite to me. I've only seen it as siding around here though.

The home I grew up in had that for the siding. It's asbestos. Ours had a slight wave at the bottom, but texture/thickness was identical. Nail holes at bottom were predrilled at manufacture.

Re: What Is It? It's Gotta Get Fixed/replaced

Yep, looks like asbestos to me too...A couple of houses in my neighborhood had it and it lasted fifty years.

I kid you not, the last one left just had it replaced last week around the corner from me and the company tossed it in the standard CD dumpster.

I drove by a few times during the process, old roof gone, new sheathing up and new dimensionals down. Dumpster is gone with no special treatment as I remember it overflowing with debris. Not sure where it went but it didn't take them any longer than a standard roof...albeit the cedar that was underneath.

I took a chitty picture right before they got blasted with rain

I dislike dealing with asbestos roofs. At least around here we need a certified company to deal with it, and they are slow and definitely not roofers, so you'll need to be there every night to waterproof it.
The guys we've used a few times want full perimiter scaffold as well.

Re: What Is It? It's Gotta Get Fixed/replaced

It don't look like slate to me either??

But we do this at work, and send stuff to a company, carpet, vct, vinyl, etc. and they can tell what is the material made of, bad or good. They send a report to us, on the wear of the product, the estimated age, on some things, the manufacturer, etc.

I don't deal with this first hand, but they can do, and WILL tell you about asbestos, trust me on this!

BTW--- I am pretty sure I have this material in stock if you want enough to do a repair.

Yep it tested positive asbestos.

Stephen, appreciate the offer but was informed that you can't do repairs "legally" by the County, State and the local Asbestos Companies. Maybe I should clarify: you can repair BUT you can't nail it since it makes it friable thus its non-repairable.

Government....

depending on the area it may still be repairable.
don't think of it as a slate or a shingle--- think of it as a tile.
you can still slate hook it or wire it.

Priced up a job in April with that on it. Because of the lack of roof workers
to remove it, I priced the job and included 2 men to be come certified.

It's nonfriable. We just have to bag it and dispose of it in a certified landfill. It is good to wear respirators and dampen the area you are working in though.

Better yet, tear it off in a rainstorm.

Re: What Is It? It's Gotta Get Fixed/replaced

At the broken edge, shouldn't slate look quite different from asbestos?

For independent verification, you could also weigh a small piece on a postal scale and measure the volume, and compare the density to that of slate, and to asbestos products.

"The transite that is produced today is made without asbestos. Transite HT, and Transite 1000 are currently available fiber cement boards that contain no asbestos. Instead they contain crystalline silica, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified as being carcinogenic to humans (Class 1). Crystalline silica is also known to cause silicosis, a non-cancerous lung disease."
