Ship Lap Boards

The house currently has a metal roof and customer is looking to replace with shingles. Is it a good practice to install shingles over ship lap boards? Or, should we cover or replace with 1/2 inch plywood.

Re: Ship Lap Boards

We had the shiplap removed for a reroof at our family beach house. It was too dried out and cracked, it "wanted" to come off during the tearoff. Got all new sheathing.

Re: Ship Lap Boards

If they are in good condition then you leave them. Solid wood is better than ply. But you might find a few hollow spots when driving nails if the boards aren't tight together.

Yes.

Be prepared to replace any rot with matching boards.

Re: Ship Lap Boards

Make sure they are nailed down tight first.

Next question will be... why are there tin can lids all over the roof.

They used those to cover knot holes.

Just a bit of preemptive answering.
