I have never thought about it, but are we the only nation that deals with shingles and re-roofs?

On another note, we are taking another look at doing standing seam roofs for residential again.

I don't know If we are the ONLY nation---------

But
I have a friend from Ireland . she has lived here about 25 years and her sons have dual citenship. I have known her 12-13 years and in that time she has taken many trips back to Ireland---and also trips to Germany,Switz., Italy,Spain etc.---- they will be going to australia nd New Zealand at the end of this month.......

What she tells me is that in Europe you will generally see either Slate---- or more likely Tile roofing. upper end is Ceramic----lower end is concrete------ But I know from other research that Europe makes some of the BEST roof tile in the world.she tells me you won't really see asphalt shingles there---- but you will find tile on even modest homes.

I think other countries more properly view a roof as a more or less permanent part of the house----definitely a part that is expected to last generations. the creation of that roof is a skilled project and definitely not something to be slammed out"on and off in a day" by a crew of illegals picked up from a home depot parking lot, LOL.

We deal with a lot of salvaged Ceramic tile originally made in the 1910's or 1920's. we do have to cull out some peices from each batch where the water locks have been damaged in handling/shipping-- but in general each piece is in as good a condition today as it was when it was made 100 years ago-----and should easily last another 100-200 years if properly installed.

Here roofing is wastefully done as a disposable commodity which needs to be thrown away and re-done every 20 years or so.......

where I am----you won't often see Standing seam done in town----- but you sometimes see it done out of town in a more rural atmosphere. In town, if you see it---- it will usually be confined to an accent piece like a bay window etc.

Personally----we work with soldered copper flat lock fairly regularly---- but not often truly standing seam.

I know other nations do not have lots of fire departments....because they don't have balloon frame construction. Stone and cement do not burn.

I know the people who really live well off of asphalt roofs hate it, but steel roofing is about a forever roof here and south and west of here. If you save money and never have to reroof, I don't care what the neighbors think.

That's why I hate insurance work. I would rather deal with people that are using their own money, because when they're using their own money they care about who does the work. When it's insurance money all they care about is that they are getting a roof for free.

Insurance work is all about greed. The contractors that do it are greedy and the homeowners get greedy. Around here contractors are covering deductibles and giving free upgrades and in some cases offering cash back on top of it.

So I'm not sure why you are complaining about losing this deal. Obviously some greedy contractor offered a greedy homeowner a better deal than you did. That's the nature of the insurance biz.

I actually saw quite a few thatch roofs in Germany (mainly slate/tile though)

I saw one thatch under construction, and tried to go back and take pics, but I couldn't find it

I eyeball 4 nails evenly spaced on a single with a decent degree of accuracy. The skip would take some getting used to. I basically follow manufacturers directions. Couldn't see much benefit to 6 nails in our weather, most blow offs seem to be high nailed or the third layover with short nails.

That's the most common residential roof here in Canada, everywhere I've been anyway.

Well that was kind of the point of the post. The contractor just lied to the homeowner to get the job.

Oh and to make this interesting. Oc is about the 3 worst shingle on the market. I wouldn't put them on a dog house.

I would put them on a doghouse

Im a little out of the loop these days with shingles but no one had a better bond than the OC continuous glue strip. The bundles would melt together if you didnt nail them on fast enough.

I scraped, primed, and painted (Al paint) a standing seam steel roof probably in 1976+-. It needs painting again.

I was selling CT until my rep didn't provide the support he should with certain situations. Although the Certainteed was very hard to sell here, I still felt like their shingle was the best.

Then the Owens Corning rep contacted me and offered me substantial rebates on top of their regular rebates to give me an incentive to switch. That was two weeks ago and it's been much easier to sell around here. Over 225 square sold since then and I didn't have to defend the name once.

I wasn't a big fan of their old durations but the new sure nail holds incredibly well and seals even better. I'd still prefer to install Elks but we know that isn't possible so that on leaves OC and CT as the only dependable shingles around here.
Is this the same rep you were strokin for taking you to dinner and being the best in the world? I am glad you finally woke up and stopped selling that junk CT calls shingles. Welcome to the dark side and glad you finally listened to someone......

Nope. He relocated. This was a different guy. I still think they make the best shingles, just not going to sell that much of a product if I don't get any support.

We stopped selling CT sometime last year for the exact same reason. I could never get support from the rep. It was almost a joke joe lazy the guy was.
