You got me. I hit the big five oh in April.

It would take me an hour to get 5 square up the ladder and stacked on the roof.

Never been on a roof, never will be. But...

I'm the fastest gun in the West, also in the East, probably in the North and South, too.

Damnd, I'm good.

I say -

1. Who Cares and 2. Prove it with all nails set at proper depths in the nail line.

5 square an hour is a shingle every 10 seconds. That's doable until you need to reload the nail gun or move to get the next bundle.

I'm more than satisfied with my guys 2-3 square an hour.

A shingle every 10 seconds sounds about right, it only takes about 2 seconds to actually nail it. Not sure what he meant when he said "5 square an hour". I'm assuming he left out flashing details, set up, trimming, felt, cutting, snapping your line, vents, throw the tarp over when it rains, roll up.

Its not so much about who is fastest but who can fit the most tan guys on one roof at a time.

You can only pick TWO

Fast

Cheap

Quality

I have never shingled solo, only with another guy or up to 7 guys. My personal record was 30sq in one day with one other guy. That was just laying it was tore off and papered the day before.

Re: How Fast Are You With A Gun.

I'm not bragging. I have been putting on shingles for 30 years. I was just surprised I could still do it. And no that's just shingling no flashing or prep. The true sign of a hack is the guys on this site always calling everybody else a hack. I was roofing when you still didn't no any better then to shi$ your pants.

Seems to me it's always been that way with roofing. It's easy to do which makes it too competitive, meaning there's no money in it. Rates around here used to be around $15 a square labor, that might be enough to buy gas and lunch and go home. Maybe you could make a decent wage with it, I don't know, I never cared enough to try so I stick with remodeling.

Re: How Fast Are You With A Gun.

Up here I can get $160 a sq plus material. I can do a 20 sq roof in two days with a $10 a hour laborer. So you can make a little money. I still would not do them all the time
Hard work

The problem is anyone thinks they can do it (really anyone can) but the problem is very few ever do it right and very few homeowners will ever know the difference.

There is good money to be made if you charge right. As an employee, it's hard to make decent money. I pay my guys pretty well and they know it. I pay Laborers what some companies pay shinglers.

As an owner, I have the ability to make a killing in regards to money. I've made a few grand in one day. On the flip side, in WI, I only get about 7-8 months of actual working weather.

When I was an installer, I was able to make between $175-225 a day. However, I knew right away that if I was installing shingles full time for the rest of my life, I did something wrong with my life this why I decided to take the leap at 23. Since then I've laid about 100 sq on my own and only on jobs I've felt like working on.

I don't envy anyone who is much older than 30 and still stuck laying shingles. I know it's tough. I don't like hiring guys over 30 because I actually feel guilty.
