Downspout Making Formula

Hi I've own a seamless gutter company and have been in business since 2001. I went out and bought a machine after working for a guy for one day and have turned into a successful busness. While I would consider myself an excellent gutter installer there a few things that I would like to learn.

First of all how to do a downspout making calculation. I have always measured from a ladder making the fascia to wall piece first and then the bottom length. I can make and hang a single story downspout in 5-10 minutes, but I had a guy working for me for about a week who who had a formula for making the downspouts by taking a fascia to wall measurement and then a fascia to ground measurement. He would then make all the downspouts on the ground at once and then go hang them. His system was about twice as fast as mine. I am much to set in my ways to change but I would like to learn this formula to teach to employees. If anyone knows the formula I would appreciate it.

Another thing I have never learned it how to hand tab a 45 miter. I have always used strip miters. Personally I prefer the looks of them to hand tabbing but It would be a good thing to know if I get stuck on a job far away from a supply house and I end up short on parts or paint.

Thanks

Re: Downspout Making Formula

Hand-made miters are easy. wall to outside of outlet inches, add 5". If you're right handed, use the right (green) snips to remove 5/8" from bottom half, about 1/2" from top half. When you start cutting feet, cut 3/4" out and use the left (red) snips.
Snip color is important, because it and the cuts make it nearly impossible to fold the miter the wrong way.

Maybe it's just me, - - but I call red snips 'right-handed', and green snips 'left-handed' . . .

Good 'snippet', but I still say you're standing on your head . . . J/K

Reds cut to the left, - - but would generally be used with your right hand.

Greens cut to the right, - - but would generally be used with left hand.

Therefore, - - I call red 'right', - - and green 'left, - - because that's the hand I'm going to use them with . . .
