Re: Certainteed

At the PRAC meeting early this Spring the CT rep mentioned this was forth coming. At that time a couple Lowes in the South East already carried CT shingles which was said to be a test market.

This is what the rep said about the whole deal. Lowes told CT that it's great they sell them insulation and othe products but if they don't also sell them shingles they don't want anything from them. You could simply say they forced the hand!

It's funny to because CT's stand has always been they don't want their shingles in the big box stores.

As long as Lowes carries most of the colors it will be nice because now the opportunity will present itself to obtain shingles after 5pm and on weekends (if we run short).

Re: Certainteed

It will mean big bucks for CertainTeed, I just hope it does not have any negative impact on the quality.

The problem with that.... is Lowes makes train car buys in January for the entire year. That's why they can buy and sell cheaper than the professional roofing distributor. CT only has an obligation to fill the orders. Not make certain that they come from a certain plant. So one rail car shows up and it's from Shokapee MN. The next one is from somewhere in AZ. Yet, the CT shingles from your pro roofing distributor come from the nearest plant.

Take a look at the OC shingles Lowes carries.... you'll see three or four different plants all mixed together. Good luck getting them to match. It will quickly be the same with CT shingles as well.

Thats interesting. I am going to check that out. Seems implausible that they would tangle distribution so poorly.

Re: Certainteed

It's not the case 100% of the time Matt. But it happens a lot with the box stores. Especially since OC and CT have so many plants right around the midwest.

Brookville, IN
Medina, OH
Summit IL

For CT, stuff here in the midwest generally comes from:

Avery, OH
Shokapee, MN
Oxford, NC

And, the manufacturers generally make absolutely certain that the pro roofing distributors always get product from a single plant.

But, when it comes to the big box stores and they release another PO for several rail cars of 3-tab weathered wood, it will come from any plant that has them on the floor ready to go.

Re: Certainteed

The thing I liked most about CT is that we couldn't get them at the big box store. I used that as a selling advantage.

Even their "half" of the going rate is still probably more than the actual going rate.

I use CertainTeed shingles. Iíve always thought that CT does not understand how to help contractors market the product. This proves that they donít know how, and they donít care.

Why are you talking about? I talk with my rep a few times a month and usually meet with him once a month. He always asks what he can do to help make it easier for me to sell.

I have a lot of literature and all that, it's all free on their website.

I am not going to answer that question now because it would take too much time.

But let me ask you this, how does CertainTeed selling their product at Lowes help you to market their product?
