Just WOW Framing A House Solo

I happened to be scrolling through YT videos tonight a came across this series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw66ErD4_zk

I'm not a framer but the only thing that gave me doubt was the lack of lally columns and steel in the basement.

I'm only at video #4 but thought you guys would enjoy this.

This kid (I'm old so I am allowed to call him that) has more energy than I could imagine at his age.

Give it a look. (If you're like me you keep on clicking and clicking on the next one)

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

When I was in my early 20ís I went to Oklahoma and worked on a framing crew. We worked through the winter and I will never do that again! Let alone frame a whole house by myself. This guy is nuts. Does it say how long it took him?

It's amazing what you can do when there's no one around to tell you that you can't do it!

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

I built my own house in 1984, I was 24, it was a 2 story saltbox with 2x12 rafters and metal roof. I even poured the concrete, wired, plumbed and cleared the land, all this while working full time for a contractor. I couldn't do it again!

I watched some. Interesting, but I couldn't catch some of the organization from a single view point. I'll watch more later to see what I can catch.

Working solo, setting a beam or joist directly over my head is a no-no.

There certainly is a feeling of accomplishment doing a task like that yourself.

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

Done it multiple times. A house that would take a 4 man crew 2-3 weeks takes me 10-12.

Probably true, though I've also done a number of tricky beam retrofit projects and I think I did it in fewer man-hours, even with lifting a 4-500 pound beam solo (using various tools and techniques of course)

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

Done a lot of building by myself. Have always figured out how to do it. Having a man lift sure makes things easier to do. Thinking of building a new shop, 30x 30 x12 , even at 68 it will get done mainly by myself. Crazy maybe, just the way I am.

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

Crazy yes...but doable. I built my current house in 2004. I did most of it myself. Having forks and a cage for our Bobcat was key. Sheeting the 10/12 roof sucked solo! Lots of nights and weekends to get it done.

Re: Just WOW Framing A House Solo

Did this myself.

4,500 SF under roof. 3 stories.

Did the excavation, poured the slab, layed up the block, framed, trusses. Sheathed and papered the roof. Starting plumbing and electrical.

Got some help on pour day, and truss day.

When I was building my house I did most of it by myself. Every spare minute I was there doing something.
Had to call some friends to set two triple 24' X16" microlams.

And yeah, my body payed a price.
