Floor Joist Repair Under Bathroom

Hi there. Had a guy who was scheduled to do this for me, but he bailed and I need to get this done this weekend to stay on track so going to fix it myself...a little outside of my normal wheelhouse. Working on a house that the previous owner cut out about 8 inches of 2 sistered floor joists in order to plumb the bathroom upstairs. Bathroom plumbing has been reworked properly, but now i have to fix the floor joist and repair the subfloor above.

The gap starts about 8-10 inches off the exterior wall. The floor directly above this will house a linen closet, but just to the right of it is where the new tub will sit.

My question is should i sister the existing boards as they are or should i try to knock out one of the short pieces by the exterior wall and run a new sister 2x8 as far back as is necessary.

Thanks, as always. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I guess it doesn't take much to call yourself a "general contractor"

If in doubt, Rip it out!
A new joist is always going to look and perform better.

A third alternative would be to sister the adjacent joists and use a header across but be sure to allow for the flooring to support upwards of 500 pounds.

OK, so buy the IRC for your state and study it. (I thought you had to, to get a GC license).
What state is this?
It will guide you with loads, spans, notching and boring requirements for different species lumber and sheathings. It even addresses different spans for plumbing.

I would probably just sister the whole Thamn ding on both sides as long as I had bearing on both ends for the sisters.

Andy.

I didn’t realize the IRC was published by state. Doesn’t the “I” stand for “International”?

It is, but some States use same code book with minor code modifications for their own state.

Usually you build your floor substructure first and after you rough-in your plumbing without hacking up the joists.

Re: Floor Joist Repair Under Bathroom

Thanks City Decks Inc. I appreciate you checking back in. Unfortunately I determined last night that someone outside of me needs to take a look at it. I will take your suggestion and educate myself around those videos. I love to learn.

As some of the other guys were saying, I am very new to this world. Im originally from Chicago but a couple yeara ago in my early 30's my health began to fail, and eventually they encouraged me to come to st. Louis for treatment at wash u/barnes Jewish. I have always tried to volunteer, but this situation allowed me to partner with some non-profits. I also have met a women that is truly an angel and we work together to help provide housing for families in transition.

So a steep learning curve but have been excited about my new purpose and what all this now means in my life.

Appreciate you writing, and if you have kids, Happy Fathers Day to you bud. Thanks again. Jp
