Custom Ceilings - The Ideas Are Limitless

I helped my best friend build his home several years ago. Being a fiercely proud Texan, he wanted something uniquely Texan in his study/office.

We came up with this. His Texas ceiling.

After we built it I thought about all those Harley riders out there who would like a custom recessed wall or ceiling display. Could be lucrative for the right trim guy in each city out there.

Actually, a little custom framing covered by sheetrock is a great way to upscale the look of a home.

Niches, arches, domes, angles....framing it is pretty cheap, but it makes the home stand out from others.

That Texas ceiling is very cool. All of that work is good. At the risk of sounding critical, that butt joint in the crown in the 1st pic of the 2nd ceiling jumps out at me pretty hard.

Yup.

The second set of pix is a home in Memphis...and I met the crew that did the trim carpentry. When I walked into the house I was the only gringo.

I'm not saying that non gringos are bad. I just know that the builder was using illegals to get the best price - you find those things out real easy by just talking to the dudes. Great, hard working people...its just that they snuck in here and brought my wages down with substandard cheaper work.

Most builders I saw there in Memphis were like most - all about bottom line costs.

That's why I was asked to add these framing touches along the way to the interior. It's a cheap way to dress up the elegance of the home.

I was thinking how cool a wall sized HD logo recessed into the den or game room would look all decked out with lighting and a bunch of small die cast bikes on glass shelving. You could include a looped soundtrack of one idling or maybe angels singing for the REAL purists. Some of those folks would pay $$$$$ to have that type of shrine built in their home.

You could christen the thing with motor oil.

You should draw up a few ideas and put them on your web site...(if you have one). Your portfolio is awesome. If you could make it known to the public what kind of work you do and how much you care about quality, they would probably be beating down your door. I know I would if you lived near me.

I do a lot of barrels and domes. Pretty typical I guess but they still look cool. I Did do a really cool double barrel on the last house I built. kinda hard to explain but the next time I am in the area I will snap a few pics.

Who ever put that awful light in the Texas ceiling should be beat with a rubber hose,
Definitely should of used some rope lighting or something else

Cool idea though.
