BK hit it right on the head! There are many who claim to be do it all guys but few who can deliver (at least around here). There are many carpenters around here with a bigger drive to drink and do drugs than excell in their chosen profession. They would rather live life paycheck to paycheck (garnishments included).

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

I think it depends on what skills and personality you have. A person who is very focused on particular subjects may call them self something very specific. Whereas a person who is great a many things, but master of none may be happy to call themselfs something generic like general carpenter, of home renovations.

Basically call yourself something you feel comfortable with.

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

Mostly just a PITA.I like to call myself a contractor.I try to do it all. Some I excel at better than other things but do it all well before picking up a customers check.Started when I was 16 (57 now) working with a then 74 year old man and his 18 year old grandson building houses.Worked building moulars for a few years.Worked doing framing for some years for a custom builder.Owned a custom cabinet and furniture shop for 12 years and now into interior and exterior remodeling.
When I have a 16 oz on my belt I'm a sider or trimmer.When I have a 28 oz on the belt I'm a framer.
Bought a new belt the other day that had big nylon bags.Used to leather and never tried one.My guys will never let me live that down. Not that it's nylon but that it's new.
I buy a lot of new stuff for the trailer for them to use but never for myself.Makes the old man look like a rookey.
If I would ever try a Stilleto,I'd have to get a new crew.

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

Yes Spencer, this is an old post. And yes I am new to forum's. I apologize if I appear to be advertising my business, I just thought it would be a good way to introduce myself. If you look over my posts I have also contributed towards the discussion too.

I believe the information on this thread is useful to past, present and future readers. So is there really any harm in commenting on an old post?, especially if people are willing to comment also. That is the great thing about the internet and forums, people can turn to them for help. It is a source of information, no matter when that information was created!

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

Old thread but why not...

Is renovation carpenter a thing? I do much of the finishing for the company. I usually hear the term 'finisher' more than 'finishing carpenter' in my area though.

Depends on what kind of work I'm doing on any given day.

General maintenance technician.
General carpentry.
Leak detection specialist.
Product installation tech.
Drywall specialist.
Magician.
Comedian.
And if all else fails............Handyman.

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

Such a good question/topic.

I prefer the term "craftsman".

I constantly watch people who have an understanding of what I do, fumble with terminology.

Most settle on "carpenter" or "contractor" (but you can see the look on their face saying, "but that doesn't really cover it").

Even on here....I chose "General Contractor".....I'm going to change it now.

Didnt the term master used to be given to someone who had spent a minimum of 10 years as a journeyman?

Re: What Do You Call Yourself?

I'm primarily a finishing carpenter. Usually go by that.

But lately I've transitioned to carpenter. I pick up a shovel here and there, frame/form/fences/decks/e.t.c.
