Finishing And Sealing A Barn Beam Mantle Piece?

I've got a customer who wants a mantle like the attached photo, adding a stone hearth underneath.

The beam should be fairly dry. Its old and has been stored inside for quite some time.

Do I still need to have it kiln dried before finishing?

Any advise on what type of stain and finish to use to prevent any issues in the future?

Re: Finishing And Sealing A Barn Beam Mantle Piece?

I've built a lot of those type mantles. Mine are salvaged from an 1800's post/bean barn & are stored under an open walled leanto. I don't do anything but cut to size & sand them to smooth to the touch, but leave in the character. Most times, I add a dark stain & 3 coats of our floor varnish. I've had no issues doing it this way & have had opportunity to inspect several of them years after they were installed.

Here's an example of one we done.
