Nice use of playing cards !
I use old HP laminate samples. You can get a whole chain full of last years samples from your counter top dealer or supplier.

Thanks for dredging this post up from the deep. I wasn't a member the first time around, and this is probably one of the most useful posts I've seen anywhere. I am self taught in some areas, and let's just say, my teacher is a bit lacking in the simple stuff every once in a while.

You should look at most of Basswood's stuff. IMO he is one of the most informative members on CT.

These are some of the best tips I have learned in a long time. I never thought such a simple thing as a pack of cards could be so unbelievable useful in everyday carpentry. I will be picking up a few packs tomorrow. Thanks

Re: Card Tricks For Carpenters

near to where I live, you can go into the casino and they will give you a pack of cards, free. Problem is that you have to be leaving the casino.

So my wife and I go in, walk around for five minutes, and then collect our playing cards

I use them for shims also, currently installing some hard-edge and it has to be very close to the plane of the window frame. Hey it sure beats lining up at the table saw to cut your own shims!

Oh yeah? Well when things got slow around here in CA I used my business cards to shim the washer machine. Worked well to get rid of that jiggle.

Without scrap vinyl, and luan I'm lost LOL. Anything smaller, the boxes electrical devices come in are usually around...about the same thickness as cards.

well playing cards are a little thick for me we use them as a go no go gauges, shims for us are cig papers, job, rizzla, or what the local med store/smoke shop has on sale contractor looking to cut costs!!
