Rob, you asked a personal question and I simply answered it from a personal perspective. No insinuations were involved or intended. Nor do I have any issues with you being yourself; I would expect and want nothing less. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be the only one to miss the liveliness you add to conversations here if you weren't here or being yourself.

Re: Top SEO / Marketing Firms

I used to be the top SEO expert in the world, but since I have two businesses not related to contracting I closed of my more than 90 websites except two. I now have only one website for my plumbing and construction related services and only one website for my farming and dispensary business. I laid off more than 50% of my employees during the past few months. Unfortunately, I was recently notified that one laid off general laborer committed suicide. I never would have guesses he would have been the one to do it.

It is actually funny how everyone has opinions about SEO and websites. I put a lot of effort and time into building websites, but never for one moment did I expect that the internet would be my bread and butter. I will still recommend having an internet presence, but always want to remember that the internet is only ONE SMALL ARM reaching out. Spread your effort and advertising money evenly with several direct mail, AdWords, newspapers, canvassing and whatever works for your trade.

I'll bet everyone is glad to see that I am not in this fight.

Maybe, you are 100% right. Either way, I made $millions and $millions in the plumbing business and the way I am downsizing I should (may, but never positive) be 100% of of this business by December, or maybe mid 2017. While I could cut my phone lines with a pair of scissors and lock my office door it actually takes a little time to lay off all the employees, sell the vehicles, close out insurance policies, etc.

I've had a few people mention the same over time, but I have never gotten specifics. My instinct is that they are simply not simple or cost effective enough for the average contractor. Yes/No?

Re: Top SEO / Marketing Firms

Talk to the SEO company. Brand means nothing when it comes to SEO.

What worked a couple of hours back, may not be relevant.

Yes, you should have basic fundamental straight and have a repeatable process and a solid framework.

No one has the magic wand. Brands are actually terrible. With a big brand SEO, who do you think is researching testing and finding up-to-date methods...and rechecking the practices for ranking...

A 9 - 5 employee isn't doing that. A smaller company where the owner is the key SEO guy - it's mostly driven by passion. Problem with smaller companies - usually messy process, if that.

so what is the solution.

Find a local SEO guy/gal / or an SEO working in your niche - See how passionate he/she is. This form has enough posts to educate you, so you can interview and ask set of questions.

Look for tell tales.. Ask them if they can rank you in first page in 10 days or something ridiculous... and if they say are confident to crack top spots for a competitive keyword - run, don't walk.

Set expectations before you sign the dotted line.

Re: Top SEO / Marketing Firms

Ultimately I think it's best to find someone who knows all aspects of the business. SEO is just a tool to use no different than PPC, Social Media, etc. They are all just tools to help accomplish your goal of getting new clients in the door.

If Google changed tomorrow anyone focusing on only SEO would be in trouble. It's similar to people who use their Facebook page as their website. If Facebook shuts down tomorrow you are dead in the water and starting over. (My Space went down nearly over night)

That's the reason why I think you are best off with a consultant and/or company that knows all aspects of marketing.

And always ask for a case study or a show of results.
