Opinion On Phone Number

Feelings on having an 800 opposed to a local number like 724 .
Do you think customers react better to seeing an 800 number?

No. A local number says just that, that you are local.

Second that. We had 1-800-ROOF-PRO. The best thing (and worst or them) the call tracking. Proof it doesn't work.

I agree. If I call Joe's plumbing, I'd like to speak to Joe or someone who knows him. Sometimes when I dial an 800 it surprises me when I am really calling someone down the road vs. someone 4 states away.

800 numbers were important when we paid for long distance. I have several local numbers and when I go to a new area I get a local number. They are all forwarded to my office or my cell phone.

Re: Opinion On Phone Number

If your service area is only local, then your number should be local. There is no real benefit in doing an 800 number unless you are able to service a much larger area.

It is still better marketing to get a local number in your new areas than to get a toll free number. Toll Free numbers say one thing, BIG CORPORATION.

Unless you're a national company - go with a local number. It indicates commitment to the community.

Re: Opinion On Phone Number

There are other reasons to use a local telephone number. If you have your business listed on Google, a local number will improve your ranking. Google trusts (and so do customers) businesses with local telephone numbers.

Re: Opinion On Phone Number

Say if you were in need of a plumber in the matter of an hour, would you call an 800 number? If you needed your roof replaced would you hire someone who's located 500 miles away? That's my thought everytime I think of 1-800

If your business is branded well, which is nothing more than reputation, it's irrelevant.

Reputation would mean word mouth, I think we are taking about first impression. Obviously if someone has heard about you, any phone number is a means to an end at that point and won't effect their impression of you.

Re: Opinion On Phone Number

Well, all the companies that are making a killing seem to have 800 numbers.
Interesting topic and certainly up for debate.

All of what companies? And if your logic is:

1) I see successful companies
2) All of them have 800 numbers
3) I must have an 800 number in order to be successful

You will find failure fast.

If you are national go for it. If not, get a local number in any regional service area.
