Missed Appointment - Did I Mess Up Badly?

I had someone email me on Friday to see if I could come by today at 11:00 for a quote, (yes, I do weekend quotes).

I didn't get back to her until yesterday because I was busy. I said , "Yes Sunday at 11:00 would be fine".

I never got a confirmation after that. So I figured that she may have made other plans since I took a day to get back to her.

Now she emails me and asks what happened? Where was I at 11:00? I emailed back and apologized, but since I didn't receive a confirmation that 11:00 was still okay I wouldn't be comfortable just dropping by. 98% of the time I receive a final confirmation with email contacts. Unfortunately, she never gave a home#.

Oh well, lesson learned.

No, you were correct. If they didn't confirm the appointment why should you assume they were expecting you.

If your response consisted of "Yes, I can be there at 11:00 Sunday," then that means you should have been there. You screwed up.

If your response consisted of "Yes, I can be there at 11:00 Sunday. Please respond to confirm," then the ball would have been in the customer's court and you wouldn't look the fool.

You were confirming a time she suggested so that was the end of it. As far as how bad it is, that's up to the HO. You were meeting at her house on a Sunday so it probably wasn't much of an inconvenience. I'd apologize and then try to set up a new appointment.

Apologize, explain that you had expected her to confirm, and offer to re-schedule. It's not as bad as a blatant blow-off.

Re: Missed Appointment - Did I Mess Up Badly?

I did apologize the second I received the email and explained I was waiting for confirmation, and offered to stop by if she was still home, (lives 5 minutes away). Never heard back.

I guess it bugs because I pride myself on NOT being one of those guys who never show up. I'm always within 5 minutes of appointment times, (or I call).

Re: Missed Appointment - Did I Mess Up Badly?

Yea I'd say that's a mix up on your end. Just because she doesn't respond, "Great. See you then!" doesn't necessarily mean she hasn't put you into your calendar. If she suggest a time and you say you can make that, you've confirmed the appointment unless you blatantly ask for confirmation.

In the future, I'd ask for confirmation or, worst case if you unsure, plan to leave and make a quick phone call before you do to confirm the appointment is still on. Simply assuming the appointment is off could leave a bad impression.

Hope your customer is ok with your explanation and you guys can move forward on this one. Good luck.

Yea I would apologize and reschedule. I too would not have shown up without a confirmation. Email is nice but I still prefer using the phone for last minute stuff.

I have the opposite issue. Got a customer who wants to use me but gives nothing but a land line. All 10+ calls have gone to answer phone and they call back a week later. I tell them I will come over on a rain day and they say great just call us and we can meet you. Well how the **** am I meant to get over on a rain day if you don't return calls for a week. Getting sick of chasing this one but they won't give a cell phone number.

They both work but will meet me on a rain day. But it's impossible to get hold of them because they don't reply for a week. I think they are hoping I'm just gonna say I will come over on the weekend. Ain't gonna happen though.

Re: Missed Appointment - Did I Mess Up Badly?

All smoothed over now.

BTW, today I got a call from my mason asking me some questions about a column he was building for me. I said "I have no idea what you are talking about". He said I referred a column job to him for a porch that I was about to start to reno. "What?"

I drove to the site and recognized it from a picture the client sent me on April 6 asking "how much to rebuild this"? I said to call my mason first because the pillars need work, and he may eat your budget. But if you still have money left over it would be roughly $***.

Never heard a word until today that I got the job. I've never even met the guy. My mason says he's very nice though...lol.

I guess sometimes you don't need an appointment.

Re: Missed Appointment - Did I Mess Up Badly?

I will email back and forth a hundred times.
But, I ALWAYS tell them we need to talk on the phone to confirm the appointment. This allows me to ask questions and to qualify them as a customer I want to work with.

Emails and texting are to impersonal to me, I guess.
