Hey wait, I'm an art major! I have 28 years in the sign business, 26 with my own shop. This sort of thing isn't unheard of although more difficult to get away with now. I've had a number of people come into my shop, look at a photo of my work on the wall and say "Hey, I saw that sign on so and so sign shop's wall".

Re: Just Got My Truck Lettered.

I wonder if it wasn't really an honest mistake. You see a logo and then years later you have to come up with something similar and this just pops in your head. It seems slightly familiar but you can't place it. That could be it. But it's just so much the same thing. Probably not.

It's not even based on it though, it's the very same thing, he just added a stroke to it.

The lettering looks great! I have a masonry business and I have magnets I stick on the doors of my truck, I'm thinking about getting my truck lettered.

Brr, Alaska. I've always wanted to travel there and one day I will. Seems like a beautiful place.

How long is your roofing season?

It looks good. Did you / will you put your shield or contact info on the tailgate too? That area gets more distance in visibility.

Didnt have the tailgate on when I got the lettering done. I had a goofy cap I got rid of. I plan on doing the tailgate when I get the van done too.

Have you noticed a spike in calls from people who've seen you driving?

That sucks. If you used a special tracking number just on the sign you would know 100% how many calls it generated.

I always ask how people get my info, it's usually a referral or houzz. I mostly got the lettering done so I stand out when I pull up.

Re: Just Got My Truck Lettered.

People tend to just remember the name and don't go by phone numbers on the vehicles. It might pull in some calls but very few, these days especially when they can look you up on their phones. Had a guy yesterday call me from across the street from where I was working but it was too far to make out my phone number.

I knew a sign guy that screwed up and reversed the order on two numbers and they didn't notice it until 5 or so years later. They were a little upset, to say the least. The sign guy suggested calling the number to see if they had been getting calls, an old lady answered and said no one called looking for the company.

Re: Just Got My Truck Lettered.

I think it looks great and very professional. Truth is, everybody judges, especially skeptic consumers that don't know us. When I first saw that sign on your truck, it showed long term commitment and that you take your business seriously.

I would definitely blow up fb/aacustomcarpentry on the rear. It's a huge branding opportunity for little cost. People get very bored when stuck in traffic...

Re: Just Got My Truck Lettered.

Whatever way you guys want to take it, the thread has served a purpose beyond Aaron_a's OP. For me at least.

Truck lettering, branding, marketing, etc. can do a lot or a little.

If Aaron's truck vinyl never does anything aside from stimulating a response suggestive of a professional contractor, it has served a worthy purpose.

One could have a really great logo, but the idea that the logo itself will have any real penetration into the markets in which it exists is wishful. I mean getting eyes on a logo and having it stick would take some marketing saturation commitment beyond what many of the forum members are up to.

So for Aaron, unless you have expectations to blast your signage all over town for quite some time, I think your expectations are best tempered to a belief that the truck looks good and clean and professional. If your work references prove that you are the same, then the truck or future website will serve to be an ambassador of your professionalism, even if the logo image isn't permanently burned into the cerebral depths of your target market.
