Re: EDDM Vs Door Hangers - Need Some Info

Obviously every trade may have a different result... I am a Roofer this is what works for me.

Four years ago I knocked doors exclusively. Residential and commercial. I did not knock if I didn't think they were in the market. Nobody ever slammed a door in my face and not everyone answered the door. For those that didn't answer, I put a personalized note on the back of the knocker. The trick I think to doing this is continuing to do it same houses until you get a response.

Pick your areas. Busy streets into neighborhoods are IMO better to contact than the houses in the back of the same neighborhood. I say this as letting people know you are in the neighborhood with job signs and lettered vehicles, ect.

Obviously if you are looking for Insurance Restoration work you should be looking for that type of damage. Here, unlike say Dallas it is uncommon for guys to pursue this type of work and even know too much about it to deal with adjusters and claims or the skill set to knock.

For re-roof type work knocking on doors that people may not only need your service but have the money to pay for it makes the most sense.

Your mailer or your message no longer gets buried like it did in the past. The post office is dying for business, that's why they are being creative with programs like EDDM.

Factors needed for a good direct mail campaign:

1. A targeted list is critical.
2. A direct mail piece that gets OPENED.
3. A direct mail piece that gets READ.
4. You must have a compelling OFFER, a Call to Action, and a Sense of Urgency to have a successful campaign.
5. You must do more than ONE mailer. Spaced repetition is critical.

Nothing, I mean NOTHING works better than a well thought our direct mail campaign.

Most companies are fighting for Page One on Google, what a waste.
Everything above is SPOT ON.

I would agree. The problem with most of us in the trade is that we don't put appealing offers to get the customers to call us. The other thing is so many times, they "have a guy" they know that can get them by and really only call on the big jobs. I think the challenge is not if marketing works, but is the mindset of getting through to the end user that there is VALUE in having a PROFESSIONAL do the job - not the weekend DIY'er.

I think what has killed us more is Lowes and Home Depot driving DIY Network, HGTV, etc., and fueling the weekend warriors. Just my 2.

As far as direct mail working - I was in the biz then moved out and now help with marketing for people as my family does direct mail - and it works. BUT you need an offer. You need to create the value and you need to do it more than once.

You NEED to create the trust and repetition does this (at least in Indy) as there have been many people who get paid and don't complete the job. Never to be heard from again. So the repetition creates the sense of security as a safe community business.

If you need any help or want to bang out ideas with direct mail, EDDM, marketing or printing ideas I am now doing this for several construction companies and would love to help. We print all kinds of things, can help you print your eddm's, design them, your flyers, etc. AND save you money.

I will never charge you to talk - I love to help people - and hate to see them waste money - 8442142867. Can help you save some money and help with budgeting too. You can contact me through my user name above as a web address com

Why? Because it would stand out. It's not fighting it out with 10 other EDDM offers in the mailbox.

Also, the door hanger would suggest you're in the community. That's usually what people prefer.

As others have mentioned, not every community appreciates door hangers. And doing a lot of door hanging can be more costly.

But whichever you choose, have a great response system setup -- both on phone and on the web. You'll need to track your inquiries, help turn them from warm leads to hot leads, and follow-through quickly.

Setting up your marketing so it works like a seamless funnel, turning prospects into customers, is what you should be striving for.

Good luck plazaman!

What a lot of people don't know is that you can EDDM DOORHANGERS! Wait for it...instruct them to put it in their utility room with an offer "when they need it" and not only does this create Top of the mind awareness - you also get the ability to have the offer in front of them in an instant when they might need you in an emergency and you can be a big help too. Just a thought...

You claim you do bathrooms, but yet all you have gone on about is advertising the fact you do marketing, on a 2 year old thread none the less.

DID bathrooms with my old father in law - got divorced. Always had a marketing background and now, I just help people with their marketing - was doing some research on EDDM's and this thread came up. Nothing more to see here. Carry on. I noticed it was a 2 year thread - you seem to still be reading it.

That's because he's in the printing business and is trolling for prospects on CT.
