I'd just install it and then argue like a maniac if called on it. That's why inspectors love me.

I was thinking of just saying I sanded off the stamp, but look at the damn thing, isn't it nicer than any SS beam you've ever seen?

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

i am not in favor of an okey doke move.

liability down the road & when do you not bend the rules.

but i will say that i am no altar boy....

can you get the architect or an engineer to ok the change?

how big a span & what kind of load are we talking about?

a clean CVG Fir beam, with a good looking install, the inspector may not even notice.

another option is just tell the inspector you substituted the beam for the appearance. Tell him the CVG beam was way nicer looking than the ss. i've seen ss graded lumber that looked like junk.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

After hearing about roof collapses due to the recent wet snow out there I'd have a liability concern. Any engineer would have the same concern. Some are willing to evaluate old beams in place and specify numbers for its use, so there may be one around that would do the same for a new beam.

Overall, it seems unduly complicated to me. Up here, I could get some select structural Doug for lumber, and just pick through to get clear and good graiining and color I used a lot of it for appearance.

Home Depot, can you believe it?

I'd think you would have to get that custom milled if you wanted something that size in CVG. And you would have to specify which way the grain runs. Can you do it in LVL's and box it with cvg fir?

Boxing is certainly an option.

Just exploring options. Time for the big reveal: This is my own basement. First project on a home I own in 11 years.

I'm not really trying to be that fancy. It all started because I can only find #1 fir and clear in 4x10, but not the SS that the beam calc tells me I need.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

Wood Source has it's own grading facilities, I would think you could just order one up. Their select structural seems to be in Denver, and their clear is in Portland.

This can't be the first time this has come up.

I'm sure I just don't know where to look. Part of the problem of only living here 5 years, and starting a busy business that took off so fast. Haven't had the chance to diversify my suppliers. Researching other specialty yards. Found one that looks promising right nearby my neck of the woods.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

when we built the gym in 2012 had an issue of couple of units of ss 2x8 that came stamped 2 & btr.....

called these guys and through the lumber brokers help we got them regraded, stamped & a letter explaining the two stamps to the inspector & engineer.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

When I order #1 dry stuff I often get SS delivered in the mix.

I had a unit of 2x8 x 16 delivered once that was all fantastic beautiful wood, lots of SS in there. Straight, no wane. I considered putting it aside and getting another for the rough framing project.

Most of the time though it's just the same old junk!

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

We don't see much Doug fir up here most places. Back around 2003(?) When the bottom fell out of construction Home Depot started having df studs. Most of them were clear, none had wane. $1.69 per stud is what I recall. Around the same time, some clear Doug for 4X4s showed up at Lowes.

I'll take appearance grade df studs cheaper than knotty spf any day. Made some pretty balusters, posts, etc.

Pretty nice stuff to work with, except the splitting.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

Pretty much everything I see these days is junk. I have set aside visually really good material for later use in something I knew I had coming up. I think I still have a as Doug fir 2X12 stored. It's almost clear. Every once in a while I need something like that, and these days they're scarce.

Generally, I don't think it pays to have lumber and timbers hanging around. Eventually I'll take all the American black walnut I have and do something stupid with it like make a bath vanity and paint it.

Same thing with the mahogany.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

Bolt it to a piece of 60 Kpsi steel, like a 4" wide C-channel or 4" HST on top/hidden?

Rip long ways, hide a 9" deep x 0.5" thick, Fiche plate in the center cavity, plug counter sunk screws/bolts. Cyborg lumber...

Add some Knee braces at each to make it work like an old timber frame barn?, two 16" knees = 32" shorter span....

Glue up a clear 4"x 4" to it and drive on, get a Pro to stain/finish it

I'm guessing too much hassle, and needs the grade stamp.
