Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

If a beam calc calls for a Select Structural doug fir beam (in my case 4x10) can I substitute a CVG grade? CVG is not grade stamped, but I think without a doubt it's superior to select structural - having zero knots, and tighter grain.

Is there any documentation or code reference that confirms this?

I think you'd have to get it graded if your inspector is an @ss

BTW wouldn't a glulam be cheaper than a cvg beam?

Yes, much cheaper. Also cheaper than select structural.

Just to be clear, I don't want a glulam. I want the look of CVG fir. So I calced it with SS assuming that was closest. #1 isn't enough.

Honestly, I think my supplier doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't think he is really quoting me CVG 4x10.

There is no documentation or code reference that would allow it that I know of.

Select Structural and glulams aren't apples to apples but a premium grade doug fir glulam with clear wood inserts is going to cost a lot more. In your area getting a 4x10 select struct should be a piece of cake. We go through trailer loads of it and it all comes from your neck of the woods. I've never seen doug fir specified as CVG.

Interesting. Maybe they send it all your way. The 4x10 is the difficult piece of the puzzle.

And all high end fir trim here is CVG fir. But seldom timbers.

Here's what I have:

Glulam: $70
#1 fir: $75
C&btr: $175

#1 fir doesn't quite calc but ss does easily and is very close to the glulam.

I'm sure. I need to find an architectural timber supplier. I'm kind of just surprised my good lumber yard can't figure it out. My rep is usually amazing.

Just looking around, bear creek lumber in washington may have something under ss, they seem to specialize in architectural stuff.

Semi unrelated, but I know a building owner who got a 14x24x24' beam. Completely clear.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

Canyon in Everett WA sends out structural beams that look like CVG. I do a happy dance whenever my yard sends me stuff from Canyon instead of the regular mills.

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

I'm jealous of you guys that can get cvg easily. Last time I priced it out, I think I was quoted $8/ ft. with about a 2 week lead time

Edit- for 1x6

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

True, but it's at least more local and common in your area.

When I was looking into it, I could've driven up to Leo's supplier and gotten it cheaper than down here. And that included gas, tolls, and drive time

Re: Can I Substitute CVG For Select Structural?

You could try a local timber frame outfit or look for a smaller mill that will sell you direct. I haven't seen a lumberyard that really has a source for timber. Even their distributors have a pretty high markup from the mills and very limited supply for grades other than #1 fohc.

Maybe you can get a civil or structural engineer to visually grade it and okay the design, an added expense but might be a solution.
