Are You Making.....

A living or making a GOOD living? I keep hereing other contractors at the lumber yards say stuff like makeing a LIVING when asked how business is going. Yet they jump in there NICE newer truck pulling a nice tool trailer. They live in a nice house etc....

Maybe it is just me, but to me that is making a GOOD living being able to afford all that nice stuff. Maybe it's because when I moved out at age 17 and had to eat romen noodles every day for weeks at a time. Just making rent and utilities. I know what a strugle life can and how hard it can be sometimes.

Now I can honestly say I am making a GOOD living to support my family.

So how are you LIVING?

Cole

When those guys aren't making payments on any of that stuff then there is something to talk about. Other than that there is no coorelation to having nice things and doing well, having nice things with barely a dollar left at the end of the month isn't doing well, and that's the way the majority of Americans live.

Can't think of anything that I could do with nothing more than a high school education that would allow me make the kind of money I do in my trade. My business related debt is zero. If I could just figure out how to cut my insurance costs & taxes, I'd feel like I was actually making a good living.

I didn't think about that, I have only ever financed my college education and my house. I forget some people live on barowed money.

All is well in my kingdom. There really is work out there, and there always was.

The whining contractors who don't return phone calls, show up late or dont show at all to appointments because they are either on vacation or on the lake, can't wake up until 8 am, take 3 hour lunches, and generally think that the universe revolves around them are the first ones in this economy to get whacked.

If you are full of fire, ambitious, and willing to work, then the work will almost always present itself.

I am making strides to live the better life. I'm still a renter and it sucks but at least I don't have shovel snow, cut the grass, or worry about how under water I am with the value of the house I own. I already know that I am going be successful EC because I can see myself living in a nice house and if I keep doing what I'm doing I'll soon own it. I'm 40 and still do whatever I want to do when I want to do it but at the same time I ready to settle down and have a family.

Sometimes it's not exactly what you want to do, but you stay working and earn money.

I'm guilty of vacation & the lake thing.

Very very true. A number of guys seem to think that all you have to do is ride around in a flashy truck & talk on the cell phone & you're a big time contractor. I do remember working, quite successfully, with no cell phone.

You know single life was ALOT of fun. But with an A#1 super wife like I have, and my family, I would not want any part of single life again.

I'm still a full-time student but I make enough on the weekends for food, rent, and the occasional night out. Might be a little different after I graduate and have to start paying off my student loans

I get up early every morning because I want to. I look forward to coming home at the end of the day. When I go to bed I look forward to getting up and meeting the challenges of the day. I have a heck of a lot of fun, met some really cool people and enjoy life.

Re: Are You Making.....

Boy it's nice to see you younger guys are doing so well, well at 53 I guess I'm gonna start a new trade, I am going to hang up my plaster tools and now take up HVAC, so I'll be back in school by next week I hope. Yeah back in the day I had all kinds of JOBS coming in, but now I am lucky to get a Job once every couple of months, I am 6 house payments behind I get $200.00 in Food Stamps Boy I'm living the Good Life That's as bad as when I got Divorced and was living in my truck for three months in the winter. So I guess I'm back at that level again Life is Good.
Nothing more fun then working for yourself for 25 years just to have to start all over again from the bottom

Not here you wont, some areas are better than others and my area all business is suffering. You can return phone calls, have uniforms great references do everything right and have no work to speak of.

I have never seen it so bad since the 70's , I’m happy for you that you have a full plate, if I lowered my prices to the 1980’s I would have some work but I cannot survive like that. Last week we got 5 leads no jobs all were residential through my website and no we did not get any work. It’s very hard to stay productive and compete with franchise contractors using illegal’s but they do a great job of fooling the public with there advertising.

My neighbor down the street is a painting contractor who works very cheap as his wife makes $90,000 grand a year with health insurance so it’s his hobby.
My business provides my family with a living not a HOBBY.

Re: Are You Making.....

I know a few other contractors that have their own operation. They've been in business for quite some time, and they still only have 2 or 3 employees, they never really expand, and their employees are illegals. They're pushing 50 and they strap the tools on everyday and hump. What's the point ? for all that I'd rather go back to union work as an employee. Earn 6 digits, full benefits and pension and annuity. 35 hrs per week.

Part of the reason i started the business is because I am sick of the tools, the beating on the body. Now, I love the business end, the challenge. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy laying-out and framing and rocking, but i enjoy it more when someone else is doing it and i'm making $$. I want the BMW the big house and the big pool.

Some days, there is a flurry of activity, other days i find myself calling everyone I know to see what's happening. I ALWAYS FEEL GUILTY. no matter how hard I work, i feel like I should be doing more. It would be nice to have some more relationships with GC's..

Re: Are You Making.....

Well, i am barely making a living but for now i am happy. The divorce should be almost done, my girlfriend and i are doing the best we can financially. I didnt have much debt before i started this business but now i am in debt up my ears. Taking a loan against my home to start the business was the start, having to buy a second truck was unexpected, insurance increases, unpaid invoices and then a very slow winter have put me under some stress. The work is slowly coming back in but most of it wont start until summer.
