When every time you use a urinal you shake your head because its obvious you would have done a much better job tiling, grouting, and caulking..

Re: You Know You're A Contractor When...

I have no beef with engineers but over the course of the job your going to have to spend a good 40 hours answering questions of why you are doing something a certain way.

That and I've worked for know it all civil and electrical engineers.

Plus getting them back for all those rediculously oversized beams they have spec'ed over the years.

It does say something about your craftsmanship if an engineer/architect even considered you working on their house

Most engineers have engineered plans. Those over sized beams are taken into account at bid stage, and the connections and spans are spec'd. As long as you have good connections (Simpson type ties, welds, nail patterns, ect...

I have never seen a set of plans with double 2X anything speced. out

The engineer carries the liability for the building so who cares what he calls for We carry no liability!

Hire a laborer and be done with it. I got my start packing worse, like full sticks of 2 7/8 drill stem for boat docks.

You know you are a contractor when someone shows you a scar and your reply is um...let me show you a real scar...(you have to do a quick inventory in your mind as which is the best one to show them.)

Then if you are on a jobsite at lunch with the same scenario, it results in taking up the whole lunch with everyone showing their scars and the stories that go with them.
