Would You Mention Your Competitors Angie's List Rating?

A nice Master Bath remodel in the $22000.00 range has come down to my company and one other. I asked and they told me the other Co. Heck why not ask? The other company's AL reviews reflect a highly subbed installation lacking supervision resulting in dirty jobsites, long delays, and forced homeowner supervision. My AL reviews give a pretty true reflection of our company and we rate an A. Their last review 8/5 really tells a tale of frustration. They mention 3 separate people tileing the backsplash at different times, missed appointments by the owner to settle problems and having to hire a plumber to finish the remodel. Money aside these are good homeowners, retired, and deserve a good experience. Theres no shortage of work now but I would like this job so what say you? Give them a courtesy call and mention AL or let the chips fall where they may? Appreciate your thoughts.

I get that. I really do. Guess that's why I haven't done it and probably won't.

Exactly.

Anytime someone is trying to sell me something & they run their competition down to build themselves up, I look for another company to fill my needs. I don't care what someone else isn't going to do for me, I care about how you're going to solve my problems.

Next time you pitch yourself make sure to point out youre rated on angieslist google and yelp. I also tell people to check any contractor out on the state licensing board site to look for complaints and licensure.

Trash talking someone else only makes you look bad...

tell them what you do right. Talk up your company.
Tell them about your Angie's list rating and why it's an "A".

maybe they'll go check it, and while they're there check your competitor.

Never trash a competitor, It will be bad CARMA.

Customers don't like it when you talk bad about the other guy. Make the best case for yourself as you can, and if you get it, you get it. If you don't, there's a a heck of a lot of bathrooms out there. Like has already been said, dont mess with bad karma.

Re: Would You Mention Your Competitors Angie's List Rating?

i disagree with everyone here!

my sales doubled when i stopped the philosophy of being positive only... you need to educate the customer about of the negs the others guys..i typically dont do it by name, but if i know they use certain products i will....i use solid core pvc, if i know the competitor uses foam core i explain the differences to the customer........if i were you and i knew the competitor had major issues id let the customer know in a gentle/educating way

when you found out your competition from the customer i would have immediately told them to check the AG review on them.....dont go on and on about how bad they are, just tell them they may want to check it out.....educate the customer....help them get educated....the bad AG review against them isnt your fault.....not giving the customer all the info they need to make their decision is....why compete with 1 hand tied behind your back....

when a customer says he can get a waterheater from Home Depot i go a step further and bad mouth the hell out of HD.....i start with the waterheater itself and explain the differences in the unit compared to mine, then i tell them to check the internet about the HD installers.....i explain they will find horror stories

i dont see an issue with it at all......its all about educating the customer and explaining the differences

if they dont know the difference between you and this competitor and the competitor is less expensive arent you doing a bad sales job?

sometimes the difference between bad mouthing and educating is a grey area

im brutally honest with customers...i want them to have the best product in the end......the people who become steady customers trust every word i say because of my brutal honesty...people dont know....if you dont tell them these things they still wont know and they will have a bad experience AND YOU will possibly lose the job....everyone loses except for the crappy contractor you kept quiet about

Re: Would You Mention Your Competitors Angie's List Rating?

Absolutely not.

Not that I wouldn't be overjoyed about negative feedback regarding my competition, but it's none of my business.

Sell yourself. If you can't win on your own merits, then you're doing something wrong.

As a poster said above, mud slinging is for politicians.

My integrity as a man comes before any job.

Sounds like you're thinking the right way about this. Stick to a "positive campaign."

Re: Would You Mention Your Competitors Angie's List Rating?

I've worked my a$$ off to get the internet reviews I have (4.63 out of 5) and show them off every chance I get. I earned 'em.

There is nothing wrong or unethical about me sending links to my customers of my and my competitor's reviews. I'm not saying anything bad about them; I let their reviews speak for themselves as mine do for me.

I'm with huggytree in this one. Present it in an indifferent manner.

Whoever you choose, be sure to check them out as much as possible especially Angie's list and yelp.
