Would You Fire Someone Because Of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)

Would You Fire Someone Because of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)-socialmedia-lge.jpg

Quote:
During the hiring process, a job applicant’s social media history is of particular importance. But for employers, there are both benefits and dangers involved in examining a potential employee’s social media activity. Does an Employee’s Social Media Matter?
Contractor Talk has a recent article (linked above) discussing the benefits and risks of checking a new employees social media as part of a background check before hiring someone.

The article made me think of a related topic that has been in the news a lot recently about people who have been terminated from their jobs because of comments made on social media.

Do you follow employees' social media accounts? Would you fire them for making controversial comments? What about hate speeches or racists comments? Why? Why not?

The morning of June 30th we will do a random drawing of the members participating in this thread for a swag package giveaway, including a Contractor Talk hat, tshirt, and travel mug.

This is what will be included in your swag package!

Only way it would affect me is if it broke the no cell phone policy during working hours to post anything to social media.

I would, but living in a "at-will-employment" state, I would fire him without cause.

Re: Would You Fire Someone Because Of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)

I have fired one person because they shared some pretty confidential information on facebook. Another employee took a screenshot of it and brought it me the next day. I am not friends with employees on facebook and I dont go looking for them either. I figure its their business and if they want to share it with me they can when they see me.

Re: Would You Fire Someone Because Of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)

YES! YES! YES! I most certainly would fire someone if they made a fool of themselves on social media. Anyone who works for me represents me, my company, and my family's business.

If you like to prance around in a wading pool full of Jello while wearing a unicorn costume, that's perfectly OK. But when you post it on social media, that becomes an issue for our business relationship.

After all, who really wants Jello-Unicorn man in their house around their wife and kids?

Re: Would You Fire Someone Because Of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)

The unfortunate answer is yes. I've had MANY customers friend my personal page and like my business page. It would probably need to be something egregious to warrant termination and I was thinking exactly what Wingnut wrote...it would need to be "without cause" to avoid a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Nah. what they post in their personal time is none of my business. Unless it was something about a client and was specific using names, I would not consider it my business at all

If their post caused me to loose confidence in them as a level headed person who made good decisions, I would no longer trust them to handle my business and would be left with no other choice

None of my business what they post on social media. I make a point of not friending business people as well as my tenants etc. it's better to keep it strictly professional.

Any thing that would effect work. Would be dealt with accordingly. Firing being the extreme.
If it doesn't effect work. I don't care.

Re: Would You Fire Someone Because Of Social Media? (Swag Giveaway!)

I won't talk about why I would fire someone, but I decided not to hire someone after a quick Facebook search revealed that their FB profile picture was a marijuana leaf and their page was littered with pictures of them smoking dope, talking about drugs and cursing. I'm pretty sure they would have failed the drug test anyway....

It would have to be work related before I consider it.

If it was work related, or if it carried over in to work maybe. Depends on how serious it is.

Absolutely if it showed illegal activity.

Yes, in a small town reputation is all you have. If my employee was posting himself doing something illegal, or something that tarnished the image of my business, he's gone.
Depending on the severity I might give one warning.

I would be concerned about the legal ramifications for firing someone this way. I could still see me doing it though. So far I have been able to not friend any of my employees so far.

Unless they deliberately tried to harm the company, no.

It's their life when they are off the clock. This 24/7 we own you mantra companies seem to have gained is PC BS
