Working The Night Shift

I worked on a place over an hour away the past couple of days. I dont like driving that far but I kinda know the guy and he said he couldn't find anyone to do the work. So I put in the time to get it done. The last time I worked on one of his apartment buildings it was 1 hour and 15min drive. The last night I left there at 1am. Last night by the time I got out of the shower it was 3am. I left there a little after 1:30 and had to drive in a raging blizzard.

Is it just me that burns the midnight oil?

I find time more precious then money since Im running out of it. I dont know why but people were always calling me for work and hour or more away. Ive been trying my best over the years to bring in word of mouth business closer to home.

Then make that your primary goal. I only worked that far when I was working for someone else. My first local deck I got by handing out door hangers. That turned into about 3 jobs for the same client who has referred me to several other locals.

Have you ever turned down a local job because you were busy working out of town?

yes but it was something they wanted done in the next few days so I couldnt get on it. And thats one of the things that still grinds my gears. I worked on a job this summer and the lady was having a garage built and the GC said he is booked up for 2 years. A GC friend of mine who is kinda half way retired and does mostly bathroom remodels is booked up for about 2 years. But when people call me they want it done NOW!

Depends on what you do. Most of the GCs I work for stay booked at least a year out which works well for me - I know I have something coming down the pike.

When a customer calls and has something not working that want it fixed asap. When they call wanting something added they usually are willing to wait a few weeks or a month.

Not just you, and it's usually 3 HR round trips every day. Sometimes over 4...for me it's not the distance it's traffic

Re: Working The Night Shift

You guys need to do more commercial work, banks start when they close make sure they can open in the morning with out dust or finger prints on the vault door , There is nothing better than having a crew trucks trailers waiting for the bank to close at noon on Saturday so you can take out the drive thru and be ready for Monday morning with nice painted curbs etc.

You hope there is a 24/7 store in the same plaza.

May be 7-8 years ago we went in to a Apple store and repainted it in one night and I mean the whole store front and the rear warehouse had a guard there to search every one and the trash on the way out .

Re: Working The Night Shift

I used to all the time. I still will if needed. However, I try and do 6-7 hours a day now. Any more and I start to not enjoy it.

Re: Working The Night Shift

I worked a huge amount of nights in my 20's and 30's.i still get sick when I see one of those halogen light stands. Did a lot of drywall by those. I think it's just something that you do in your 30's.im in my mid 40's now. I hurt alot from overworking, I know my skills, I know people, and I say "No" a lot more. But I'll still do a night job, if it's absolutely necessary.
