Re: Why Is The Siding Falling Off?

Hard to tell what kind of staple it is from that picture. It does look smaller than 16 gauge but not sure. I have my foundation guy install 2x2 PT strips in my foundations for vinyl siding.

I’ve done the staples in vinyl before but you miss the studs a lot when the sheathing is covered by housewarap, then you have to cut the siding away from the staple. I just use nails now, not much slower.

Use a pair of tin snips and cut the staple.

On staples from VSI.

Why would OSB swell and fail under properly installed vinyl?

Vinyl still leaks after being "properly" installed.

Vinyl is final around here. My little house or a million dollar McMansion. Some might have brick or stucco in front but vinyl everywhere else. Have installed it on hundreds of houses. Never seen a staple used though.

It's also why I won't use the lower end house wraps, those leak and deteriorate too easily as well. A few $100 more gets you night and day quality on the entire envelope.

Same here.

Cutting the vinyl (with snips) and pulling it away from the staple is easier than cutting the staple. Easier on your snips too.

Unless it is an unheated garage or a gable end of a house , at least here, which makes no sense. You cant tell me water does not get in behind there.

I'm really surprised by this, since I've seen houses burn where the vinyl siding burned. Heats up, makes a pile at the bottom of the wall, and burns.

Re: Why Is The Siding Falling Off?

:NIST tested it and clapboards. Vinyl siding burned up the wall and into the soffit in something like 240 seconds, clapboards went 400 something seconds.

Once it burns into the attic, there isn't much time to save the structure.
