FixPencil from lee valley. Expensive, and so are the leads, but the hardness is just right. Good for anything from frame to finish.

Tough aluminum body. But it's just for me. I'm not buying this for crew.

Your guys Home Depot pencils must be better than ours. They suck here lead falls out every time you go to sharpen. Only luck I have is at yards and I refuse to buy pencils so I have to take them 2 at a time from lumber yards. Good thing I am there a lot. I don't know why every supplier got tight on pencil distributions . they use to give me a box every time they dropped a big load of lumber. Without even asking

I buy hd pencils, I've never had a problem with them. Irwin pencils suck though, and 84 lumber, I'll buy them before I use crappy ones. Erie material has good ones too, but last time I asked they gave me 5 wtf?

Staedtler, medium for timber, hard for concrete.

Re: Where To Get Quality Carpenter Pencils?

I use the Pentel P209 .9 mechanicals for fine work. Been using them for 2 years now and love 'em.

HD carpenter pencils for everything else, although I'm partial to Sharpies for framing layout. Easier for me to see.

I stopped by a proper mom and pop hardware store today on a whim and they had some Dixon Red & Blacks gathering dust, so I grabbed a handful. I really like the way they feel and write so far. When these run out, I'll probably order a gross of 'em.

I think a lot of it has to do with how you sharpen it. I was watching a laborer yesterday hacking the end off and kept breaking it. By the time he had it sharp it was only half a pencil

I would agree that your knife and angle play a huge roll, but no matter what, a crappy pencil shoots you in the foot every time.

I'm surprised Whipple hasn't shown up and tried to give you a Chubby.
Haven't bought any yet but they look like they'd be handy. Jason loves them but that's just so he can walk up and put his Chubby in your hand.

Re: Where To Get Quality Carpenter Pencils?

I switched to mechanical pencils several years ago. I use a 0.9 mm lead. Anything smaller and I break it too easily. The 0.9 makes for a very precise line, and no sharpening. A package of five Bic Velocity pencils is about $6 at Staples. They are a little fragile, so I keep them clipped to my shirt or in a jacket pocket.
For very rough or wet lumber they aren't so good, but they are great for everything else, especially finish work.
