What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
I do carpentry primarily, but working for a GC we get a hand in everything every now and again.
I gotta say, once every 3 to 4 months, I love a day of solid painting. Got to paint the whole exterior of a carriage house today and it was great. No tool belt, no loud noises, no distractions. Turned the jambox to classic rock and zoned out. Love a good painting vacation. So what's all of yours 2nd favorite trade? |

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
I usually tend to think about the opposite.
My top 5 worst jobs: 1) Roofing. No good day to be a roofer. 2) Plumbing. Why are there so many different fittings??? 3) Drywall finishing. Takes a lot of patience. 4) Painting. Especially exterior. Set up, prep work, etc. 5) Concrete. I have never done much, but nobody doing it looks happy. Advertisement

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
I'm with you Easy. Painting would be my choice. I find it artistic, relaxing, there really is not too much thinking/stress involved once you get going.
Except painting the ceilings. Hurts my neck. |

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
Primarily a carpenter, but don't mind taping mudding drywall. Worked for a painter for awhile doing his carpentry work. He ran out of carpentry work and I ended up swinging a brush instead of a hammer for a few months. Don't mind it too much as long as it's my own mess I'm trying to cover.
![]() I don't mind roofing every once in awhile either. Nice change of pace and mostly mindless work until you get to some of the flashings. I usually do 4 or 5 year, so it's not too bad. Detest masonry work.....everything is heavy. ![]()

I'm an electrician, but I would rather do trim carpentry and framing. Nobody ever stands back and says "Damn that 3 gang switch box looks good."

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
Basically a Carpenter and not a Mason, but I really enjoy Cement Repairs, especially with brick and block. I find it very enjoying for some reason, seem to make good time with it and I get paid pretty good for it. ...but only like it in nice weather, lol.

I love big machines. I would love to try out excavating but it probably won't ever happen.

Framing is my love, siding is my mistress and trim work is my massage therapist.

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
After working for GC's for 35 years, I know just enough about most trades to be dangerous, and I enjoy just about all of it.
Love to run heavy equipment, if I don't have to put fuel in it. Concrete is great except for the bending over. Masonry, after scaffold high. ( are you starting to see a pattern here?) Red Iron if It's all bolted connections, (one thing I never learned how to do is weld. ) Carpentry is my trade. Love to run chair rail. Roofing, 4/12 already stocked with shingles, underlayment in place, chalk lines snapped. Plumbing is fun, if it is knee high and above. Electrical- Like I said I know enough to be dangerous. (and this one can be really dangerous)

Re: What's Your Favorite Trade That Isn't Your Trade?
Masonry. Specifically, historical restoration. Good combo of physical work and art.
And welding.
