What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

There's a real shortage here. No matter who I talk to, its the same observation: skilled trades have been literally written off, coupled with nearly decade lost while we recover from the mortgage bubble fiasco that crashed the economy in 2007-2009.

This isn't much - but its a start:

Our state seems to be thrilled about it. They're recruiting school kids, giving the little training, and paying them pennies. Buisness as usual...

Re: What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

Illinois is following typical protocol, and doing absolutely nothing. Someday in the not-too-distant future it will become a crisis (probably when some state senator or rep. can't find anybody to work on one of his houses), they'll throw ridiculous amounts of my money at it, and it will have zero effect. Poor Mr. Senator or Rep will hire a crew from Mexico, and it will all be forgotten. And I'll never get my money back.

Nationally, the ICC has a program to train/teach/hire young'uns. I'd encourage anybody interested in the issue to check it out - get ahold of a local ICC Chapter and see if you or your HBA can help, or go to the schools in your area directly and see if they're interested. https://www.iccsafe.org/about-icc/go...dministrators/

Re: What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

California is very proactive and progressive.

They are doubling down on their social engineering, where they emasculate all the males, de-feminize all the women, educate them that they should all be metro-sexual hermaphrodites, living in 400 sf "apartments", and riding segues to jobs of questionable usefulness, while wearing man-buns and skinny jeans, eating a croissant.

All in the name of "diversity", while they grind everything into s^^t that all looks the same, and excoriate anything that doesn't conform to this idea.

They import Mexicans, Asians from several countries, and East Indians, to be slaves and do all the physical work, because they all think manual labor is below them, all the while claiming they are so "compassionate" towards immigrants, and they're just trying to help them. They'll want to be plumbers and electricians, right? We're giving them the opportunity!

But none of this affects me. I live in the far northern end of the state, where for the last 10 years, "Green Rushers", or spoiled brat rich kids from New York and Connecticut, came out here and f^^ked the place up worse than it was, trying to make a quick million growing pot.

Now that it's legal and the bottom has completely fallen out of the market and Fish and Game is raiding 10 illegal grows a week, they're crying and bitching about how unfair it is.

And the place is turning into a ghost town.

So there won't be a need for tradesmen up here in a year or two.

The school tell the kids to go to college and construction is a terrible way to make a living, basically.

Re: What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

Local schools have building trades programs where they build houses, we have a 4 county vocational school where students go for half days to have shop type classes.

I see lots of middle school kids very interested in apprenticeships after HS.

You guys are depressing, grouchy old men.

Re: What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

Not sure what the state is doing, I do know the school district our kids go to has shop class 7-12th grade as an option and even a career technical school if they want to enroll in that in conjunction with school. There is also a youth build program where high school drop outs can earn their degree and have some marketable skills. See link if you're interested in details.
https://www.oesd114.org/youthbuildkitsap

I know we are trying to hire and train employees for the future health of our company, have a recent grad that is smart as a whip and very dependable. Also have reached out to the high school to talk to shop classes and let the students know that there's career potential with company's like ours. Like most things in life, we can't sit around and wait for someone else to fix a problem.

Re: What Is YOUR State Doing About The Skilled Trades Problem?

Right on the heels pf the first article was this one.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/bu...ws/1459488002/

"The Home Builders Association of Michigan issued a "wake-up call" last year about a near-crisis in a shortage of affordable homes. But instead of ramping up, construction has slowed.

Blame it on rising costs, regulations and shortages of land and labor that have made it more expensive to build homes. Meanwhile, high demand is driving up prices in Southeast Michigan, especially for the starter houses and midsize homes that many builders cannot afford to put up."

Id say if the schools are building Media centers and big ass football stadiums they can help prepare some folks for the work force.... I do pay taxes so I feel i have some say.

That being said I don't trust the public system here and don't use it.

I have donated money to trades programs. 3. 1 is doing some good

Supposed to be 30 degrees and 8Ē of snow here on Monday. Being an accountant in a climate controlled office sounds like a pretty good gig.

If there's a market for teaching the trades then let the private sector teach them. Even public colleges that charge tuition can jump in. But I'm not in the camp that says I need to pay extra for it.

Or do like I did, dig ****ing footings and sweep out 5 story buildings until I earned my trade experience. Hey that's a novel thought!
