Another fantastic reason not to live in a city.

Re: What A Way To Start The Day

I was once working in a run down 50 unit building in Newark when I was about to walk in a basement apartment and the Fire Inspector luckily stopped me right at the door.

The floor looked smooth and white, and then when someone upstairs flushed the toilet it started to make waves. It was a sea of maggots.

A broken sewer line that was broken for some time

I bet the sewer line is full of needles.
About 50% of the time that's what it was in Vancouver. But I guess that's junkie city.

Oh man.

My BIL used to work as a body man for Mack truck dealer.
He told me one day a garbage truck came in for service and the service guy told them to park it way off in the corner of the lot.
My BIL asked why he did that because it would be a PITA to walk back and forth to it.
The service guy told him to ask that same question in the morning.

Next morning (hot summer) my BIL goes out to the truck and the entire parking lot was solid maggots under it.

But, your story got that one beat by a long shot

Re: What A Way To Start The Day

Years ago, I was removing asbestos from pipes in the dimly lit residential crawlspace.

I crawled through a pile of what sounded like Rice Krispies.

When someone dragged a drop light over, we could see a cat carcass and a massive mound of maggots, all mummified.

I wish I had something that could compete with these maggot stories. I've clearly lived a sheltered life working exclusively in Montclair.

Most of these stories you've got seem to come from your days doing alarm system work, from what I gather.

Something that's always bothered me though is this:

If you owned a building, how would your financial priority not be the sea of maggots in the basement over the alarm system? Does "sea of maggots" not raise any alarms?

Maybe I'm unclear about exactly what your purpose for being there was though. Should have come back with a flamethrower.

Oddly enough soon after this episode it did burn. "Lightning"
I had to do service work there one day and I always went in through the unlocked basement door. Lights were off which was odd and the smell of smoke was around. I see a bunch of cops searching an apartment and one asks me why I am there and tells me the building is on fire. I was walking around for 10 min in a burning building.

Company who owned building owned many buildings and this was a problem building with drug dealers and such. Multi unit buildings in bad sections of urban areas are vastly different than 6 unit buildings. If there is not a good Super and lots of security the building gets destroyed. This one "mysteriously" burned down and property was sold.

I regularly used to see people stick newspapers under the door to the Supers apt and set them on fire while he was inside. Brand new alarm panels set on fire after 1 day, they used to spread hair gel on the panel and set it on fire.
