What Do You Guys Think?

I am working on multiple jobs right now, just two of us, and we haven't re-visited one in a couple of weeks (it is the larger of all of the jobs) and we are just trying to knock the small ones out of the way to free up more time on the schedule for once we are done with the large job. HO called me today and left a voice mail and I quote "you know my name and my number, now where the hell are you at" which enraged me. She is a sweet lady, lost her husband in October I believe, but now I am getting pissed with this ****, she has been calling my suppliers asking them if I have ordered material and such, and I have told her, I will get there, I am just trying to get these jobs done so I can collect on them, now after this voice mail I am pretty steamed up. What would you guys do?

btw, we are half way completed on this job.

Re: What Do You Guys Think?

I'd be pissed too if you left my job for a couple weeks with no real reason.

Did you inform her that you would be absent for a few weeks, or just not show up?

How long have you been stringing granny along?
Seriously, you did give her a start/complete date, right?

Re: What Do You Guys Think?

told her I would be working on other jobs and would be gone a week or two, today is two weeks exactly. I have spoken with her during this period as well to inform her that I would be there as soon as I got this last job finished.

I did give start and completion dates, but we went over the completion date, we do have an extra week because of the weather. The other thing, is some stuff has taken a little longer than planned, things have been more of a pita than planned.

Re: What Do You Guys Think?

Lets see. You take your truck into the shop. Mechanic says it need the motor replaced and yanks the old one out. About that time he gets a few tune up and brake jobs, quick easy money so he lets the larger job sit idle for a week or two.

Nope, just can't see why the HO is upset with you.

Re: What Do You Guys Think?

it didn't work like that, I actually had gotten these jobs all in the same week, so instead of staying on one and losing the rest, I decided to try and get the smaller ones done and out of the way, when I told her I was going to do this, she said fine, and "it wasn't a problem" even when I mentioned the length of time it was going to take.

you must not have understood me correctly, that isn't why I am doing the other jobs, that is why we went over our deadline. This isn't a t&m job, so I am not making more by dragging it out or anything.

IMO

You have a problem with communication and scheduling. The elderly customer is paying the price for your shortcomings. Fix it.

Granny's house from 7AM to 2PM, other jobs from 3PM to 10PM x 7 days= happy customers. I'd rather have the HO chase me away so they can go to bed than be seen as a deadbeat contractor.

Yessir, that one right there.

Having one's home torn up and strangers romping in & out is uncomfortable and stressful under the best of circumstances. Prolonging that for no good reason (as far as the client is concerned) is pretty much inexcusable.

I think I would take to heart the quote in your signature. It is what we do for others that remains. I think you're priorities are a bit skewed.

If you had three or four jobs land all at once, then you should have scheduled them in that order. Either delayed hers from starting, since it was the largest, or delayed the others. If folks are that impatient to get started, then you've not sold them on your company, just your schedule and price, or so it would seem to me.

As for her message, I think I would consider how I can get some folks over there and keep her job moving. There are always small things that need to get done on a job that don't necessarily need a crew to perform.

I think you got a bit greedy and you're mad because this woman ran out of patience on ya. Her home is torn up, has been for two weeks with no progress. Put yourself in her place. You said a week, maybe two. Have you called her to tell her what date you will be back? Or have you been giving her the ole, "Should be first part or middle of next week. End of the week latest if things don't go well" line of crud?

Put your big boy pants on and get yer butt over to her house, make a punch list of things that need to be done, like cleaning up and reorganizing, sorting material by use and schedule, and to let some sun get on the grass you've had under tarps for two weeks.

Haul off the trash, sweep, vacuum, dust, put down drops, install backer, nailers, etc... You know what needs to be done. Now get someone over there and start doing it. And send your most understanding and quiet person over there. She's gonna vent and be in a huff for a day or two and the last thing you need is someone who will, "get enraged" or "get pissed at her ****".

A large serving of humble pie anyone?

Try sending her a gift certificate to a nice day spa or a fancy restaurant. Oh, and apologizing.

Communication goes a long way. And never leave a job. Schedule the small stuff when subs are there. Ho has to wait his/her turn for a good contractor.

Re: What Do You Guys Think?

Hey, you know there are two types of contractors in this world -

Those that can't get customers to pay a fair price for their services...

... and those that get customers to pay a very, very, very fair price for their services by giving the customer an alternative to the first type of contractor.

That first type is the kind that is always scrambling from feast to famine, dodging customers phone calls of where are you?!!!? The second type is enjoying the fruits of having established a method of scheduling and working based on landing jobs by selling precisely against the first type and making lots of profit as a result.

I hope the first type never goes away!
