Not sure how that works in Okie.
Not that big of a deal here. I mean it is but Noone really enforces and they wouldn't say anything to anyone any way.

Re: Vacations...

I leave the checks for someone I trust to hand to the guys. I also withhold a week so paying them in advance wouldn't be an issue either.

I am surprised at all the comments about leaving the checks with someone you can trust, to have them deliver them to the employees. If you can't trust your own employees, you have the wrong people working for you!

My guys were only with me a few weeks, and gave them to the PM watching them while I was gone.

Several years ago I had started a new job and after my new boss gave me my first check he started telling me where his bank was. I was like "why do I need to know that, it's going into my bank?"

He was surprised that I even had a checking account. I was surprised that people didn't have checking accounts. I guess it's a lot more common than I thought.

Concerning the OP's question, my current boss will usually just gives us checks early if he is out of town with his family. If it's just him gone, we collect them from his wife. Honestly though, it makes no difference to me if I get paid early or after he gets back. As long as I get paid I'm happy.

If you give them the checks before you leave but date the checks for their regular scheduled pay day they wouldn't be able to cash them before then. What I have normally done is just pay them in advance for 40 hours and if there is any more or less hours worked it gets adjusted on the next pay.

That's usually not true. Post-dated checks (or cheques, for our northern friends ) are good as soon as they are written, just like any other check.

I know at my bank they wouldn't even notice it was post-dated...and even if they did, they wouldn't care. There's nothing legally binding them to make you wait until that date.

My bank on many occasions has told me no when trying to cash checks before the date. I hate when customers do that

Re: Vacations...

I guess I'm lucky that I have understanding employees. For example, our normal payday is Wednesday but we were working late Tuesday night to wrap up a job. I got their hours late that night so they didn't get paid until Wednesday. They didn't cry about it. Guess it helps to pay above average wages.

Re: Vacations...

Maybe my bank is unusually picky, they have never cashed a check for me before the date on the check. There has been four times that I can recall that they wouldn't let me deposit a customers check because they felt the check wasn't legible.

I write the checks and hide them onsite. Friday afternoon I call my brother and tell him where they are for disbursement. Nothing more umotivated than a pre paid employee...

If you work for us you have a checking account or you don't get paid. Direct deposit, it's always in your account by noon on friday (or every other friday for the salaried people. )

Don't know if that's against any rules or not, but nobody ever challenged it. Everybody seems to like the convenience.

Home Economics used to be taught in the public schools over 30 years ago where students could learn about banking and money management. Nowadays, students are learning where the best check cashing places are.

I took on some interns a few summers ago and demanded that everyone get a bank account. It was very common to get a phone call on Monday morning from an angry parent who couldn't cash their child's check because there wasn't anyone in my office after hours who could do any verifications.

You got that right- Or even worse is a situation where the employee gets paid on Monday, blows it all before Friday, and then he has to go nearly 15 days without any money in his pocket. At least if you run out of money on the Wednesday before payday, you can roll up some pennies to get you through the next day.

But going back to the original question, I had to do this only once when I had to leave town for an emergency. I had my local "Mailbox/Pack & Ship" store will-call the checks for my employees and instructed them not to disburse the checks until Friday morning.

Re: Vacations...

Why wouldn't people just get bank accounts? Don't those cheque cashing places take a huge percentage of what you want to cash? Seems to be cheaper to pay the seven bucks a month for a bank account.

Re: Vacations...

All my guys are on direct deposit. Our work week is Wed - Tues, and payday is on Friday. Payroll is done on end of day Tues, and we have until Wednesday night at 8 pm with the bank for the money to be in their account for Friday. I can do payroll on my laptop from wherever I happen to be, including deer camp! Past couple of years we all take vacation at the same time because it is much easier. When I would be away and they were working, the phone never stopped ringing. Mind you, vacations only started a few years ago, and I am in business 29 years, before that I didn't know what vacation meant, and still don't to a degree. Plans and files still come with me whenever I'm away, just in case. Before direct deposit, I would pay in advance; employees really shouldn't have to wait for their pay because the boss is on vacation.
